22re rebuild

So my dad's 87 4runner has a engine that knocks a little and it sounds like the bearings are very loose. He bought himself a 93 block, is going to change the bearings, seals, rehone, etc., whatever it takes to get it back to new again. (I don't know that much about rebuilds). But the next project will be to take the old 22re out of my 88, and replace it with his 87 motor after we rebuid that.

Seeing as how I am the kid, I get the option of doing fun stuff to my motor while it's out. Any suggestions on ways to make this 22re just a little bit stronger? A torquer cam? Can the head be ported and will it make much difference? Also, if I do either of those mods, will a header be required in order to even things out?

Thanks for the info, like I said I have no experience with rebuilding engines

Well the cam will prolly help, but a port and polish will most likely do nothing without exhaust mods. I'm not sure about who makes headers for that motor. I'd reccomend spending alot of time cleaning the engine, that way you make sure there are no metal shavings or grime and such that can work its way into the bearings

Good idea. Has anyone had good experiences with these cams, and you someone direct me to a supplier of good ones?

Ted at engine builder. Is the man to talk to.

You will get good results from a CAM,

3 angle valve job is not a bad idea.

If your into tearing the engine apart for a complete rebuild Bore the block out .02 .03 or .04 install new pistion and rings to match.

the complete engine rebuild kit is around $233 for everything you need.

heres a linky

the stock manifold on all '85-up engines is a very good design. set up just like a tri-y header.

i recommend buying a set of oversized valves and having the machine shop install them, as well as a decent mild cam like engnbldr's 268c stick.
