22re rebuild
i have a 88 pickup and the head gasket went out at the beggining of may. but before that it was leaking oil from the front of the motor. not exactly syre where, but i think it was from the front oil seal. the motor has about 155,000 miles. i want to rebuild it and i wanted to know where is the best deal i can get and if it was possible to rebuild it by myself. thanks

im from hawaii
on the big island. wee do have checkers and napa here and another store called automotive supply center. im kind of on a tight budget right now and i was kind of looking at those kits on ebay. but no matter what kit i buy, how hard would it be to do the rebuild by myself?
and im trying to get that other motor asap. so i can build a fresh new 22re
times are hard right now gas costs $4.10 for a gallon of 87 octane here.
i want my truck back on the road!

Allan's not saying that engnblder parts aren't worth the money you spend. They're actually quite reasonably priced. What he's trying to say in his own way...(hehe...) is that they are the same parts engnbldr supplies in his kits. The only difference you may be paying a bit less plus no shipping by going to the parts stores.
Anyway, rebuilding yourself is not hard....per se. There's a lot of wrenching involved and you really have to pay attention. And, get good guidance if you've never done this before! You may run into situations a manual will not cover. So, it helps to have someone with experience. Plenty of people here at YT do, so you can count on getting it done right should you need the help.
You will need someone's help pulling the motor and reinstalling, though. Those are really two man jobs; one person prying the motor from the tranny and the other to operate the hoist and keep it steady. Atleast, that was my experience. It really made it a lot easier. Same for the installation. You'll see when you get there.
Other than that, all you need is the right tools and patience. I rebuilt my entire 22re back in Jan. I'd done top ends before that, but never bottoms. I say if I can, you can. So, don't fret it, guy. Follow the instructions and you'll be fine.
Oh....and, of course, you'll need a good machine shop for any block or head work. You won't have the tools or skills for that at this stage. Besides, you'll have enough work ahead of you just doing the wrenching that you'll WANT someone else to do that.

thanks for the information thook.
i have changed a motor in cars and different trucks, but never a toyota. and all the times we changed it, the motor and trans came out at the same time.
however i am planning to put on a new clutch and maybe a new fly wheel but im not sure of that yet. i want to go for the best deal and what will last in the long run. i love my yota and i am not planning on getting rid of it anytime soon.
