The mudslut icon you have there makes me think you have a 4x4 truck.

Be happy with your 16, there are some getting worse.

If I recall right, the window sticker in my truck said 17/19 when it was new.

Is there a way to check the O2 sensor to see if it would help if replaced? I've been hearing a lot about replacing them and might just do it...

You've got over 200k miles and the motor is burning oil, I don't think the truck is gonna get 20+mpg they weren't supposed to get 20 brand new...

23mpg!

My '86 4Runner has:
1. A rebuilt engine with about 130,000 miles on it.
2. A new o2 sensor.
3. Downey headers.
4. Catco high flow catalytic converter.
5. A hole in the muffler (Does this count as a high flow muffler?!LOL)
6. New, plugs, wires, and distributor cap.
7. And for tires, I run 235/75R15's.

I figured up my gas mileage today, after both highway and city driving, and found that I got 23mpg. Sweet.

I'd like to put bigger tires on the thing, but I think it will make my mpg go down.

what size tires do you have? I have very similar mods and mileage on my 22RE and I average 18.something on mixed driving. (which is what everybody should report, giving a highway MPG is misleading, and I personally think it shouldn't be on car window stickers.)

With stock tires, I would proabably bump that average up to 20, or if I regeared it would do the same. Then I could possibly see 23-25 "highway" mpg on a good day with the right conditions and a relaxed driver.

Well I can't speak for the older years but as of 95 the 22re's just weren't designed to give great fuel mileage. I wish I kept the window sticker, but I guess it got lost somewhere along the line.

My truck never got over 20 even when it was brand new. I got right around the 17 that was advertised.

The 2 wheel drive models were significantly higher that the 4x4's though, so some of you may be comparing apples to oranges.

my tires are 235/75R15 BFG AT

my city/highway mileage is about 60% highway, and i average about 22 MPG that way.
everything else is stock other than what my sig says.

I would be getting about that, give or take a MPG. If I had 235s or if I regeared for my 31s.

Well, that makes me happy to know my truck's running optimally.

I would also be willing to be that the Hilux get's just a tad bit more than the 4runner in both 2 and 4x4 configurations. Maybe a MPG or 2 but no more....But here's my chart of what I would expect they should proabably get w/ proper tire to gears and in good tune

Average of Highway/City w/ 22RE

4x4 4runner: 20-22
4x4 Truck: 20-23
4x2 4runner: 23-25
4x2 Truck: 23-26

It's very possible to get a good bit above these numbers, but like I've said. I hate the way Highway MPG is used. It's misleading. A good mixed MPG shows what you can actually expect every time. No need to differentiate.

My 95 4x4 pu with the 22re gets anywhere from 16-20 or maybe 21 if i drive with a light foot.
The low of 16 was through the mountians in CO.
It does not seem to change much from city to highway...id say avg is 19.

and its got 112k and 31 inch tires.

Your 16 with over 200k and burning oil is about all your gonna get i bet.

Horse puckey.

16 is terrible for the 22re.
You can read my sig, for my truck. I get 19 all city, and 23 all highway. I drive the speed limit, so that is an issue for most people. I got 14 till I replaced my egr valve, and cleaned out the intake manifold. I put stock tires on and tuend er up. It takes time and money, but it can be done.
