22RE Noise

just picked up this truck, 91 toyota pickup.. needed a fuel pump.. got it running but now i have this question... it makes a noise upon reving up the motor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmovF_Jzvmc

not sure what it is exactly, i check the timing chain and its all in order.. i dont THINK its a rod or anything because if it was wouldnt it be constant and not only when it revs?

When you checked the timing chain,...what did you check?

How many miles? If it is around 190,000 the timing chain guides usually disentegrate at this time and allow more slop in the chain which allows it to eat away at your timing chain cover which houses the water pump jacket. The chain eats away enough to cause a hair line crack and then coolant mixes with your oil and you have a big milkshake(hasn't happened yet but it sounds like its eating away at your cover especially when you rev it cause it pushes the chain against the insde of the cover)

Thats what it sounds like to me. I would double check you timing chain guides are there.

my 2 cents!

There is a tensioner.

I'd fix your idle. Is someone in the cab revving it?

Mine does sound a little funny revving with no load.

Something is clacking. Some exhaust leak or something making it really noticable. If they're out of tune they will sound funny also. You have to jump through a few hoops to set the timing correctly.

Turn the idle down until it quits revving and cutting out like that when the engine is warmed up. As far as I know, a rod would knock both revving and slowing down. It isn't a quiet engine. It seems like they leak a lot around the exhaust manifold.

Do the front main seal when you take the cover off.

Mine had the same problem. I had the same noise occuring around 2.5-3000 RPM. I took it to a few different shops, and they all said it's a rod barring. Only had about 148k miles? Somethin' like that... Got the engine rebuilt, out the door about $1300 from a small, two mexican ran shop downtown. Run's like a champ today, but now I have valve-train noises. From reading posts on here, I've came to find out that alot of 22R's have loud valvetrains. So that's another noise you'll learn to become familiar with! But don't give up on the ol' truck, well worth your time and money to keep it around!

Don't. You can prob run that motor like that for years and years and years. Its common in 22rs that get worn out. One of mine is at that stage right now with the same noise. If you don't wanna rebuild it just drive it.....

Sounds like piston skirt noise to me, have to pull the motor to fix it properly...

My old 4runner sounded exactly like this

Could be the timing chain also though

Hell yeah man. That truck is ssssick!
If you don't want to rebuild the engine, look at junk yards for a new engine. cough4.3ChevyV-6cough. Seen an older truck with one of them swapped in it. Your truck would ssssscream!!!!

Yeah I had always considered that option as well. But hell, if you're gonna do that, might as well do it on something tha you'll actually notice a difference in performance with! Even the 3.0 V6 in some of the Yotas would be more worth the time and $$$ than the 4cyl.

I do have an extra block and head that i just finished doing machine work too thats ready for it to be put together....

The block is 40 over though....

And you would have to get new rods....

The crank is good if you wanted it.
