hey does it lope pretty good when your at idle? also when putting a new cam in its a good idea to run the motor at about 2k for about 15-20 min so the cam seats correctly. just FYI for the next one

I did call around and it looks like I earned around $2000. That's the estimates for the labor alone.
It seems to be idling fine, no loping. It does idle higher than it used to though. I may recheck the timing. I've been out of town and haven't done anything since I put it back together.

86toy-You've got it. Go for it. My only tidbit of advice would be to gather all the parts and tools you think you'll need before you start. Inevitably, you'll have to go get something else that breaks along the way. The quicker you can get it all put back together the less you forget. Start a thread, lots of good help on this site.
2 door handles? These old 4runners don't have back doors. Rear most door handle is for the person in the back seat to use to get out. At least that's what I've convinced myself. Pretty silly actually.

do you have a garage to work in? makes a big difference.. then out playing outside in the cold (no fun)
get all your parts all at once.. and think everything out it will be alot easier. read over your hyanes manual a few times.
if you dont have a garage.. you can alwaya pic up a tarp and clothesline, kersones heater.. not the prefered method but it can work..

How is the ENGNBLDR head and cam going for you? I am preparing myself to do the top and front end on my engine and thinking of going with that same setup you did and just wondering how it worked out.
And my 87 4runner has the 2 door handles and my old 88 did too. Weird stuff.

Thanks. Yes, I have a garage but its only supposed to get up to 15 this weekend with a low around 1, snow also on the way!!! Man that tarp and kerosene heater would suck in this weather!

Thanks, working on acquiring some tools first. I agree on the quicker you put it back together the less time you'll have to forget. Another reason why I'm putting this project on hold for now.

The new head and such seem to be working just fine. I've had to deal with a little overheating problem. Seems everyone is right about that dang 2 stage thermostat. I had one in my truck before the rebuild which unexplainably went bad after I put the new head in. I tried the cheap Auto Zone thermostat. Bad temperature overshoot problem. Did the old drill a hole trick. Works great. Too great. Now it runs a little cooler than it should. Called Toyota to pick up the real deal. $45. Yep, for a thermostat. Damn.
As far as the question as to improved hp or performance. Not much over stock. It is way better than it was before though, because it was running so poorly. I assume if I put a header on it I could get lots more hp, but I'm happy with it for now.
I like the setup with the street rv and 268 and would recommend it to anyone using their truck as a daily commuter. Engbldr says it adds around 5% increase overall. Sounds good to me.
