See that smaller second duct that runs along the back of the main duct from the intake, arching over the TB intake, and to the black plastic "bulb" below the TB? What is that for? My truck came with a K&N filter and that was left open. I replaced it with a '89 air box, which did not have any connector to fit that second duct, so it has been open to the elements for a year. I have a feeling its something to do with emissions.

 

That is a hose for part of the emissions junk, and the round black thing is a silencer. does your truck have an air pump as part of the emissions set up ?.

 

it's the air supply for the Air Injection Reaction system on the 22RE's. It supplies fresh air through the reed valve under the manifold to be injected into the exhuast to help reduce emissions. It's purpose is similar to the smog pump and diverter valve systems on some older carb'd engines.

 

So it doesn't matter that it is open to the elements? There are no other openings in the exhaust manifold to which this reed valve could connect. Where does it connect to (where in the system does it inject air?)/

 

Actually you can remove the smaller diameter tube, it fits into a groove on the back side of the main intake tube and while you are at it, remove the silencer(round black thing) and the hose that connects it to the square looking reed valve,(under the intake) cap it off with something and if I am not mistaken, there is a vacuum line going to it also. You can cap that off too. If you wanna get real mod crazy, that valve is actuated by a vacuum solenoid on top of the valve cover, trace the vacuum line up from the reed valve, find the vacuum solenoid that it attaches to and you can remove that too. So you really clean the engine bay up alot..

 

It's harmless for performance, so there's no reason on that point to remove it. But I did notice that the reeds leak a bit causing it to blow back traces of soot on your clean air filter. I may remove it and cap the air injection ports on the exhaust manifold on mine.

 

I just want to know if it were left open to the element, if any damage likely occured.

I want to know if the air from the intake in injected into the system upstream or downstream of the cylinders, cause I don't want to score up the cyl. walls with dust.

 

into the exhaust ports, through the tube that bolts above the exhuast manifold.

 

and I'd say that if you're going to leave the tube open, at least put a filter on it so that dust don't get in and foul the valve.

Ok, you've done it now. I'm a quivering mass of nerves at the moment, cause there may be a flippin' fully grown African elephant in the intake manifold be cause I didn't cap off the flippin' end of the flippin' manifold.

How much HP will painting your valve cover add?

 

That's not my engine, but I'd assume it would add a good 40bhp.

 

Not sure about just the valve cover, but I think i got at least 5 hp from painting the intake and valve cover

 

Paint that intake tube white and you should see another 5. Use my specially formulated, super charged, turbofied, liquid pachyderm dung additive* and easily add another 100......atleast.
