After replacing the TPS on our 22RE Pickup (I had the throttle body off), I looked into the intake with a flashlight and all I could see was black! I scraped some off right where the Throttle Body connects and the nasty black stuff is really thick. What advantages would there be to taking the intake off and cleaning it thoroughly? Also if I do this, while its off what else should I do?

Are you planning on taking the plenum and manifold off as one piece, or seperately? If you seperate them you could really clean in there with a toothbrush and some degreaser. You will need to use new gaskets when reattaching the manifold to the head and the plenum to the manifold.

Same difference. The manifold generally refers to both plenums (upper/lower) as a single piece.

The gunk that's in there is really nasty. Don't expect to have complete luck with degreaser. I'd recommend having it hot tanked by a radiator shop maybe. Mine spent 4+ days in a parts washer and still wasn't completely clean. You don't want to loosen stuff up and have it go into the head, better to get it all out.

Valvoline Throttle Body Cleaner works fantastically! I recommend your remove it like dcg9381 said; you can make a mess of your heads and also ruin the O2 sensor.

It doesn't seem like removing the manifold would be that hard. Am I missing something? I would rather not jump into a big project. Just a weekend project and I have access to a industrial parts washer but what about a pressure washer? Let is soak in degreaser over night and then pressure wash it?

What benefits would I get from doing this? Better performance, mileage, anything?

The thottle body connects to the plenum, and the plenum connects to the head. Removing the manifold is not all that hard. There are I think 10 bolts that hold it to the head. Some are just a pita to get to.

Removing the manifold isn't hard. Getting to the little hoses is. Getting the wiring harness out of there is even harder. Expect it to take some time.

I think you'd see very limited if any performance gains. You might burn a little cleaner.

The 1993 manifold that I cleaned was covered in junk. Throttle body cleaner is great, but it would have taken about 20 cans. That stuff is baked on, oil based, and just nasty.

That on is a MAJOR PITA, mainly beacuse I didnt see it, even with the head off on the bench working on it. Too me 30 minutes to figure out why the manifold wouldnt come off last week.

I am going to use a pressure washer and some serious degreaser on mine to clean it out.

Back from the dead.

Can this be done in an afternoon or a week?
What type of time frame am I looking at if I try to undertake cleaning the intake manifold?
EGR delete my done soon after.

You can do it in a day, just remove the upper half of the intake and clean it out. It took 4 Cans of carb cleaner to do the one i did. also remove the cold start injector and clean it. Make sure you have a very long screw driver or something like that, because you will need to scrape some of the built up crud loose.

Hate to revive this..But i was thinking about taking off the throttle body and filling the intake, head, and plenum with a mixture of diesel and auto tranny fluid as a cleaning agent, letting it soak overnight, and removing the spark plugs and blowing it out.

Tell me if I'm gonna screw something up. Of course, i would use the crankcase pulley for the furst few revolutions to get the majority of the fluid out.

The only thing I worry about is the fuel injectors. I also thought about taking the upper part off and just pouring the fluid mixture down the lower ports and sending off the injectors for refurbishment. I'm really trying to clean out my head and re-seat the valves and free any sticking lifters. I have a little suction at the tailpipe.

Get a furnace heat exchanger air tube brush. They come in different diameters,Spray the foam in,chase it with a brush.

it can be done fairly quickly. cleaning is what takes forever on it. im just going to have mine hot tanked when i start this rebuild. 2 hours in a parts washer, me with a screwdriver, rag, carb cleaner, it still only did so much.

take it off, go to a machine shop, pay em 10$ or so to hot tank it and clean it for you, then reinstall w/ new gaskets.
