Hello,
My 22RE engine stalled last summer, It starts, runs for a few seconds and then dies. After some research i discovered that the ignition control unit does not signal the ECU for opening the fuel injectors.
It rubs a few seconds on the fuel that is injected via the cold start injector.
The subject part (8960-35160) is not available anymore, nor have i been able to find a matching aftermarket unit.
Does anyone know if there is an alternative or can someone help me find a used module?
Sounds like maybe the AFM? It's been a while since I had a 22RE so do some reading. I think the pump is supposed to run long enough to start and then when the AFM gets air flow through it, it keeps the fuel pump running.
I believe the igniter in your pic is mainly for ignition.
You can put a jumper wire or paperclip in your diagnostic connector under the hood between Batt and FP. It will allow your fuel pump to keep running for testing purposes. Get yourself a factory manual or see if there is one available on any of the forums you can download.
The green wire sends a pulse (0,7 volts at idle) to the ECU, the grey and blue are (i think) for the pre ignition information from the ECU back to the ignition unit.
(there is no vacuum or centrifigal mechanism for advance ignition on the distributor)
I allready renewed the AFM, throttle position sensor, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter and fuel injectors. Fuel pump has been tested and is OK
According to the diagnostic system (primtive on a 1987 pickup) and it flashes 6 times wich should mean that someting is wrong with the ignition system, RPM sensor or the ECU.
As i cannot measure a signal (0,7Volts) i think that renewing this whole unit is worth a try! Unfortunately they do not seem to be available anymore.
Sounds like you've done your research. I had no idea that it would keep your fuel pump from running.
I don't have any links but I have seen a bunch of threads on various Toyota forums about alternative ignitors. Otherwise you're going to have to find a good used one.
I remember seeing a thread from some guy that rebuilt them. Was an electronics guy that just replaced bad components. If I can find it I'll post it.
Thanks again for your input.
The topic you mentioned is about the 22R ( carb. version) , its solely about ignition Mine is a 22RE with electronic fuel injection (EFI) and the signal for the injectors come from the ignition system,
