22re idle and rev issues

If anyone has any suggestions on what the problem could be, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Description:
When I first start the truck it will start up and idle just fine. If i try to take off in first itll stall and die, however if i put the clutch in and try to take off at 3000 rpm itll go and not die. This issue seems to go away after the engine warms up. The truck also won't go above 3-4000 RPM (varies, wont stop at the same RPM each time), itll get to a certain RPM and the engine will just "kick" and the check engine light will come on and go off after it is done kicking.

All sensors are pluged in and no loose vaccum lines. I also checked spark and timing and that seems to be working fine.

Edit: the truck is a 87 4runner, 22re manual transmission

Checking the ECU code/s would help...
