22RE headache, won't rev

My 4-Runner is sick and needs help. Its been sitting for a number of years and now I would like to get it going for a weekend wheeler.

Problem: The engine starts and idles great. Once you try to rev the engine it cuts out and farts through the intake if you keep the throttle open. If you spray brake cleaner into one of the vacuum ports on the top of the throttle body while holding the throttle open the engine will hold rpm but if you stop spraying it dies out. Yesterday I spent the day at a friends junkyard throwing parts at it to see if something would fix the issue. I replace the TPS and the AFM but neither made anything better. The truck idles great and the timing is set at 5 degrees. It has 38psi fuel pressure at idle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Eric

May have a bad injector or coil/ignition components.

Might want to check the intake tubing between the air box and the throttle body for cracks. Sounds a lot like a crack in one of the rubber bellows that flexes and lets in un-metered air when you open the throttle (increasing the air flow). And don't just look at those boots. Take them off and hold them up to a light and look inside while you flex them every which way.

Flash, if it was a coil or ignition issue wouldn't the think idle like crap? I hear you on the possible injector issue but I would tend to think that not all four injectors would be bad. The thing literally goes dead, it doesn't act like it's missing.

Roger, I will check those boots.

Thanks, and keep any suggestions coming. I'm dying to get this thing going so I can try out that e-locker.

valve adjustments, timing set improperly, clogged converter / exhaust, carbon tracking, failing igniter and/or coil, improper sparkplug gaps, incorrect air-gap in the distributor pickup, fuel filter....
...incorrectly set TPS, sticking AFM (yes, it's possible even with a different AFM).....
...coil primary shorting out....
...bad ECU....

since you said it has been sitting, may have a sticking valve.just a thought.would explain backfire through intake.

If it's been sitting for a long time, don't forget the obvious: oil change, fuel change. Seafoam?

wont rev

here is my theorysince it will rev up while spraying into throttle body it must not be getting enough fuel.so the pump is supposed to put out 70 psi of pressure.i had to replace myfuel pump because my 4runner would cough and sputter when i drove it.i replaced pump and all is good.did you replace the fuel in the tank?Gas goes bad in a couple of monthes it loses itsability to burn correctly.which would also causr your exact symptoms.i would check to see in the tank to see if the tank is clean too.remove fuel pump and make sure the sock is clean.you are not getting enough fuel.old gas can plug injectors to.I would also try using the SEAFOAM fuel system cleaner (NAPA) but wold check out the tank and pump first it is pretty easy to do and replace the fuel filter.
