22re head is too tall????!!!!

I am looking at a 87 4Runner I want to buy cheap. The owner had the motor rebuild and got a ported, rebuilt head for his machinist while at it. He traded in his old head as a core for the new one.

The new head is taller than the old one -- the timing chain is now too short. He said that the combustion chambers are larger, and the head is simply taller. I am trying to sort this out. He thought he might have a Supera/Corolla head?

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks!

'84 and older 22rs had "taller" heads and block height.

There sure is a lot of confusion on the year changes but I see lots of you have it right.

I gave up on the serial numbers, now I just use my tape measure, or look closely at the side of the block for that bow tie shaped pad on the 1985 and later.

The early block is 11.280" tall, the late one is 11.090" tall. 1981 to 1984 is early, 1985 and up is late but watch out for the 20R, those pop up regularly.

It seems that these engines have been swapped around, changed over, had things bolted on that don't belong, on and on and on. But the tape measure doesn't lie.

Between the early and late the only things that interchange for sure are the rod bearing inserts, the head gasket, and the freeze plugs.

Yes, early is 98 link, put one of those chains on a late engine and start it and she will let you know...Late is 96 link. Even more fun is the 1981 to 1982 is a dual full roller, all the rest are single. But don't count on that, hundreds of the very early engines have been converted to the dual roller, and lots of late engines have been converted to the aftermarket dual $$etup...

Yep. Tape measure, works every time....*EB
Good luck man

The deck height (crank centerline to head surface) was reduced in 85 with a corresponding increase in head size (cam centerline to head surface):
•Early 20R Blocks 75-80 9.120"
•Early 22R Blocks 81-84 9.120"
•Late 22R/RE Blocks 85-95 8.930"
(measurements courtesy of LC Engineering)

If the head is too tall, that would imply the block is an early block.

Don't let 99% be your limit.
50% is good enough. That means you have just as much chance being right as being wrong.
I'd give you a kiss, but you're built funny.

It's not nice to make fun of people's imperfections

So you're saying being 'male' is an imperfection?
That may explain your confusion with head size....

I haven't been around as many heads as you have, so I speak from inexperience.

The early block and the new block are hard to tell apart except for one thing. If I am correct the later model block is called a lazer block. On the exhaust side of the engine there is a big casting mark, it is round with 2 ears on it. This is where an area is machined for the turbo oil supply. It is pretty large and easy to spot.

So, do you think that if the head is too tall, then the motor probably is out of a 84-84 truck?

here's a pic of the late block:

if yours does not have the casting like what's in the pic, it is an early block
