Is the 22RE that gutless??
Is it just me or is everybody's 22re gutless? I went up to the SuperLift park today and on the way there and back I was constatly shifting up and down on the highway when it was not even that much of a incline. The previous owner said the motor had been rebuilt I am doubting that. I am going to do a compression check next weekend to see what it is.

Then there might be something wrong with mine it seems to be losing power and I have to down shift while driving on the highway when going up a slight incline.

I'm running 31"s rest is stock. I didn't think they'd make that big of a difference if so maybe I need to re-gear it. It is kinda dangerous I was merging and it don't hardly have enough power to get up to speed to get on the highway. Good thing is I don't drive it on the highway much.

I had AR-767(black steelies) and Super Swamper Trxus on my 4Runner 22re. I could cruise at 75-80mph all day long. I don't remember having to down shift on small hills unless my Runner was full of people then it was truely gutless.

It's pretty gutless on the highway. I remember driving my bro's 22re that was on stock toyota rims and 30x9.5's. Passing on the interstate was a point and shoot game, which usually took about 5 minutes to get around the car and settled back in the right lane.
But if you remember yours having more power, a compression check wouldn't hurt. Maybe it's time for a tune-up? Timing might be off a little?

It feels like it's lost power. So I guess next weekend I'll try to do a compression check and see if the timimg is off. I kinda wanna rebuild it but like most money is short and I need it to drive back and forth to work.

I was talking about my 85 before, but I also have a STOCK 22RE in my 87 4Runner that has 271K on the odometer and it has PLENTY of power. It will accelerate in 5th gear, hold speed w/ the cruise control on, run on the interstate all day long at 80 mph+ and bark the tires in 1st and 2nd gear with regularity. There is nothing wrong w/ a stock 22RE. I reaffirm that it is YOUR 22RE that is gutless if it WON'T do those things and it is in need of repair work.

Wow wabbit yours will accelerate in 5th I wish, not gonna happen in my truck and barking tires only in my dreams. This is not info I don't wanna hear.

what's your mileage? these engines take a lot of flak, because at 200k, an engine isn't going to have as much power as brand new!
i can jam around all day long at 75mph in my 22R-E powered truck with stock gears and 30x9.5R15 tires.

Truck has 210k. It feels down on power since I got it. I know it ain't going to be fast or win any races but it accelerates so slow it is almost dangerous to take it out on the highway if there is any kind of traffic. And it struggles just to do 65-70mph. Got a question I noticed that the throttle cable has slack in it and it is adjusted all the way at the throttle body.

I have a 22re stock but 30 inch tires and an automatic. In overdrive I can't make much of a charge at passing or going up hill at 68 to 72 but once I am at 75 I have loads of extra power, its obviusly my tires being slightly out of spec being too big, I am planning on going stock when they wear out. Maybe you jsut need to run seafoam through it, clean your intake, tighten your throttle cable and see where that gets you, made a great improvement in mine. It wouldnt hold 70 in overdrive at all, now its no problem. My egr valve was clogged and I replaced taht too, but moslty I think it was the throttle cable and intake soot causing the problem.
Oh, I changed my tstat, ans that helped a bit I think, its amazing what engine temp can to to performance with all those vaccum systems responding to engine temp.

I had the same issues as you. It's an '88 with a 22RE and 5 speed.
I also had a leaky fuel accumulator (the one on the front that looks like a regulator). It was actually a bad crush washer, but is what it was needed. Didn't do much to fix "The" problem.
New plugs, wires, cap, rotor. helped, but not "THE" problem.
Checked the MAF because someone had gone into it before and wasn't sure what they had done. I started to back the MAF off 2 teeth at a time. Finally got it to give me a lean knock. Put 3 teeth back into it to get rid of the pinging noise. Still didn't help "THE" problem, but it is better.
Was reading the thread on "engine surge" Finally looked at it a little closer and pulled that "needle valve" out and cleaned it. This helped the most with "The" problem, but has not solved it completely.
I am also having issues with the temp pegging out and then coming back to normal temp. I believe it's just a bad t-stat, just haven't gotten around to changing it yet.

Problem with the throttle cable is that is is adjusted all the way out so there is no way I can take up the slack unless you can do it at the pedal I am just going to get a new one. I recently changed the plugs, wires, and filter cap and rotor looked good. Not sure what your talking about with the MAF I'll look at the manual tommrow. So along with the front end needing rebuilt now the truck seems to be losing power.

If not, just get a new one and replace it. That way you will be assured of getting a factory setting.

What size tires and what gears in the axle?
Mine has decent power, 33s and 4.88s, it'll go as fast as I care to, easily popping up to 80 and higher, but 70 is about as fast as I want to go in it. When I first got the truck, 30" tires and 4.10s with a tired engine and plugged cat, it would scarcely hold 5th gear on the highway, usually had to use 4th unless is was dead flat with no wind.
