22re Factory Air cleaner housing Differences?

I got my 86 4runner and the PO took off the pair vavle plumbing. I was able to get the plumbing from the junkyard to reconnect the valve and get the engine back to factory. Well I go to connect the hose to the air filter housing and..... there is no connection available. I check how it is on my 89 22re and the hose connects to the upper half of the air cleaner housing. I go and recheck the 86, and there is still nothing that even remotely looked like there was a connection.

My question is, does the 22re use differnt configurations of air filter housings? I am assuming somewhere the unit was changed, either the top was chagned out, or the bottom. I would like to know the changeover years so i can search for a new housing or try to weld on a fitting to attach the hose.

Thanks
