Last week my muffler rotted thru so I did a search and found a bunch a great info on this thread: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...r-yota-205062/

I read thru the entire thread and was most interested in the Flowmaster 3 chamber 50 series due to the description on sound. It sounds like what you're looking for. Then after reading the reviews posted on this site, I had one installed just yesterday: http://www.autoanything.com/exhausts...J&AID=10399503

From what I read, no matter what ride you put it on, all claims are favorably the same.

I'm glad I did it, it's perfect for me

My guess would be to start with a high flow cat(or punch out what you have) and a straight pipe. with a flow master 40. those are pretty quiet, but they do have a decent rumble to them.

Thats what I'm gonna do with my truck when I get around to doing the exhaust.

Get a new cat, not necessarily a new muffler, and get 2.25" exhaust pipe all the way out.

ROFL this dude saying the flowmaster 40 series with no cat is gonna be quiet!? lmfao.

if you want quiet, and you NEEEEDDDD a new cat. then get a new cat, maybe upgrade to 2.25" pipe, and add a turbo muffler, they're cheap and aren't loud at all.

of the big 3 chamber flowmaster is nice too!

i personally love magnaflow because i've never seen one of the new ones rust any at all.....and i see flowmasters rusted through all the time lol

I'm running Thorley header to a 2.25 Magnaflow cat, and 2.25 pipe all the way back. Muffler...something cheap and stock-ish that a shop put on years ago, it's falling apart and leaky and far too quiet to have decent flow.

That said, the 2.25 pipe made a big difference, as much as the header nearly.

I don't love loud exhaust, but I do like good flow and a little rumble never hurts. I have a Flowmaster 50 sitting on the bench right now ready to go on, I'll let you know what I think once it's on.

...but that'll be a few days, front main seal decided to give up this morning so that's priority numero uno.

I went with an LCE header, stock cat, stockish replacement muffler and stock size pipe (well the only thing I actually changed was the header and muffler due to the old one blowing apart). The sound changed just a tad, the power band didn't move much at all and I got better flow to match the intake mods I've done. I'd say start with a header, then upgrade the muffler/cat when you have time/money. I plan on upgrading to 2.25" pipe from the cat back (as long as the OEM cat is still good) and a FM when I can afford it later on this year.

HERE ya go. This is the route I'm planning on taking, probably with the flowmaster 40 instead of the 50. Not sure for you after shipping, but for me it's a very good deal and MUCH cheaper than any exhaust shop I've called.

hillbilly. nice vids. Do you have stock cat and piping with the DT header and flow 40?

I have the LCE header, 2.25 piping all the way out INCLUDING a magnaflow hiflow 2.25 cat and a flow 50 SUV muffler and its decent. still hear it when you get into the throttle, but quiet if you are cruising. much better the the headaches I got with a 13 inch magnaflow. garbage. I have vids in my build thread in my link.

And knobs, just remember, the fiberglass top reverbs everything into the cab. So something might sound sweet in a pickup will give you headaches in a 4Runner. You have been warned. I learned that the hard way.

You could always put some 15's in the cargo area for some base and drown out the road noise although BBP would never let you play it on the trail.....

lol. BBP has a sub as well. But his is to drown out the kids. hehehe. I just have one 12. I have all 4 speakers as components, so I have them cut off high so I can play em loud, the sub just fills in the bottom end, I don't need to shake neighborhoods.

Even now, I have a little drone right at 65mph, but the old muffler had a deafening drone from 62-68. Made driving the freeway a nightmare, not even the stereo would help. guess my sound deadening tactics help a bunch.

thanks man. i have the dt header going to 2.25"? i think and then a magnaflow cat, not hi flow or anything, then to stock piping to the flowmaster, then 2.25 out i think. could be 2.5 though.
