Cool 22RE engine help

Hey guys, so i'm doing my 1st repair on a 22re engine. I'm extremely familiar with the 3.0 3vze and the 3.4 5vze mostly because I rebuild them, throw them in a pickup or 4runner, and send them on their way. Anyway, my friend had her father drive their 1995 22re 4runner up rabbit ears pass and the heater block came out resulting in all the radiator fluid spewing out. Long story short he's an idiot and let the thing die from heat failure.

Here is what I know so far from me dinking with it. It will start (amazing) and it will run... It runs up to normal idle speed and then drops then drops and struggles to idle correctly. It drives though, just wants to die after it gets up to opperating temperature. To start it, i have to open the TB and pump gas into it.

I WILL perform a compression check and a timing check to further pinpoint the problems/damage the engine recieved. Those results will come up in a few days, for now I just need peoples similar experiences and things they did.

Even though i'm very familiar with rebuilds and such... it's always ALWAYS useful for other's input. I hope other's do the same "don't be afraid to get younger people's input too" is what I always say.

So, now you guys know what happened and whats going on. Yes i'll do those checks soon but for now, let me know some insight on the 22re (besides being shot 40 times and still running, these things are amazing). You get my point.

Oh and specs:
1995 22re 4runner, manual transmission, SR5 base model (yes there are different sr5 models).

Thanks guys!!!

i dont know what heat damage would do to idle. . . . . .but i would sure be checking the oil for water. head gasket is the only thing i can think of. not to mention warpage.

if you end up pulling the head have new bolts and exhaust manifold studs on hand. should be replaced anyway but the additional heat the poor little thing went through could have made them lose their temper.

x2 on the head gasket. What were the results of the compression test?

So I did a compression check on the old 4cyl. It is toast but it did make it to 232,000 miles on it.

Compression is as followed...

1. 51psi oil - 53psi
2. 61psi oil - 78psi
3. 68psi oil - 75psi
4. 71psi oil - 92psi

So i'm 99% sure its the rings. Also, after starting it up after doing the test, all the burned oil, produced a crap ton of new smoke from everywhere!!! Holes on the headgasket, intake, exhaust, it's just toast.

Thanks for your help. Probably find a new engine here soon. I hope I can find a good used one for cheap.

only 232k? aww porr little thing, prob never got to see his first timing chain, why not just do a rebuild? motor with 170k miles is anywhere between 550 to 800$, the rebuild kits are 300$ if the head isnt warped

Right? It's really sad huh.

I'm almost positive it's warped too. I mean the smoke coming out of everywhere it was pretty sad. I wished i'd taken video of it i thought it had caught fire lol.

I want to rebuild it, but its not my 4runner. If it were me i'd just suck it up and spend the week rebuilding it. Buy a new head and such too. But... it's not. So i'm not sure what she'll do now, money is a huge issue lol. Anyway, this project is for another time.
