22re deck warpage

Looking for some comments or any insight, my 87 4runner says it has "411xxx" kms.. It runs fine, but burns oil (99% sure its valve seals/guides) and now it has been consuming a bit off coolant.. my lower end seems fine right now...

So i figured its time todo my headgasket and figured id do the head at the same time so i ordered up a new head and cam, oem headgasket ect... figured i could fix the coolant problem and burning oil at once while treating the 22re to some nice parts.

My only concern is, with my odo saying 411,xxx kms(255xxx miles).. what are the chances that there could be deck warpage on my block and could cause problems installing this new head? Now, recently ive had this problem with my truck over heating, then dropping down to normal again. Each time it gets up near the red then drops back down...could that cause alot of warpage problems? mind you, its -20*C out here... so the outside temp isnt making it worse..

Any input would be great

Your overheating problem of getting hot before cooling off sounds like a thermostat. That is a cheap fix that should be done. Maxing out the temp gauge will definitely increase the chance of deck warpage, head warpage has probably already happened. With that many miles a block rebuild would probably be a good idea. At least check the compression so you know what your dealing with.

has a brand new oem thermo similar problem in this one thread - https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...8-22re-229181/

yeah, i couldnt care less about the head seeing that my valve guides are shot, arent the 22re heads prone to cracking?

It could be a number of things, just sounds like a classic t stat problem. But it could be other things. I had a 22r head crack, as a result of overheating from bad hg so it does happens. With an aluminum head and iron block its obvious the head takes more abuse. But over time and lots of miles the block deck can also warp. So a new head and hg on old block might still result in a blown hg. Only way to be sure is to have the block decked. But that means pull the motor and spend more money, so sometimes it might be worth it to try. As long as you don't overheat and warp your new head you'd just be out another hg. Good luck.

Check the block and head square with an engineer's ruler when you pull the head. The cost of these motors (can't figure out why) make it worth it to swap to GM 3.8 or 4.3 from 4wd S10s.
