22RE cylinder compression/ engine removal and swap questions

I have a 86 4runner 22RE 5speed 4X4 IFS that has poor compression in #1 cylinder.
The compression is only bad in the cyclinder and improves when oil is added meaning its the rings or the cylinder. The engine leaks oil from the pan and the dipstick, maybe other places. The dealership wants an outragous amount just to open it up and look to see whats wrong. I think its bad when he starts quoting me prices to just replace the block. ($3500-$5400).

I only paid 1k for it and dont want to , nor can pour alot of money into it right now. It may be as simple as changing the rings, but i dont have the money to have the rings replaced or cylinders machined and dont want to get into opening up the engine. I have found a complete engine w/ 100K that runs well and was thinking of just swaping engines. i think i can handle that (I have some friends and can rent a hoist).
I've done some searching to find if i need to remove the tranny to take the engine out with no luck.

Can i unbolt the tranny and remove the engine ( after everthing else is unplugged/unbolted), or do they have to come out together.

This is unless there is some miracle stuff you can add to improve the seal of the piston rings. i think that is why my oil leaks, because the combustion of the engine is leaking into the oil pan and causeing excessive pressures.

Thanks for any input

Well, how much are you paying for the engine with 100k on it?

If its under $400 I would be tempted to do it but anymore than that and you are asking for trouble.

And keep in mind that this engine is only a band-aid. It's highly possible that you'll need to replace it again in a few years...
