22re code 22

I have a '89 4runner with the 22re and been having a check engine come in and go away every time I drive it. It also makes the engine stumble while the light is in, usually 5 seconds or so, and then go back to running great.

I pulled code 22 off it which is the water temperature sensor alarm. Any ideas of where I should start? I also don't understand how that code would make it run so rough.

Thanks for your help,
Jesse

I don't know where you're getting the idea your code refers to an "alarm," so here's the page of the Service Manual.

The ECU needs information on the engine temperature for, well, everything it does. So a "stumble" while it can't determine temperature sounds pretty benign.

Since yours comes and goes, you might have a bad wire. You can look for that simply by wiggling the harness while someone watches for the code. You COULD have a bad sensor, which you could check before you spend money on a new one, but I like to start with the easiest/most likely items first.
