22re clatter opinions

I have an 87 rnr bought from colorado auction three months ago, been on blocks since. REBUILT:head, timing chain, oil pump, connecting rod brngs, and adjusted the rocker arms 6 times... REMAINS: what appears to be a top end clatter/knock that seems to come from#3 intake... POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: cam out of spec, WHAT ELSE?????

Valve out of adjustment, clogged injector, bad plug and or wire, distributor....? When does the clatter happen? Upon acceleration, under load...?

Sorry! it happens under very little torque(stomp it it stops, back off it stops)and above 2000 rpm. JIMBO, do you mean exaust in the head or in the pipes, because this thing has almost no back end resistance. i mean no cat + header+blown out exaust. THOOK could a clogged injecter cause a knock, or do you mean the hiss noise my dirty injectors already make...

Well, at one point when I first got my rig it did the same thing. Had a tune up and valve adjustment and it stopped entirely. The valves do need adjusting periodically, though not very often. With a clogged injector or injectors obviously you will get crappy performance along with eventual damage. The cylinder doesn't fire properly if at all because it can't get enough fuel. That's a given. And, yeah, it can make noise. Before I got my '92, cyl. 5 injector didn't work at all and led to an eventual rebuild for the previous owner. So, definitely get those injectors cleaned. There are two ways that I know of, probably more. One fellow told me to get a can of spray carb/injector cleaner, pull the air intake tube leading from the air filter housing, crank the motor and spray a little cleaner into the injector intake a few times. Then run some liquid cleaner through the fuel system. Chemtool makes a good product on both spray and liquid. I've not done it that way, only because I was told about it after I spent $90 on a professional job. The pro job did do the trick very well and improved the performance and mileage. Not only did it clean the injectors, but the valves as well. This is my '86 I'm referring to, BTW. Anyhow, she ran even smoother and quieter with a lot more pep and eliminated the hesitation problem I was having upon throttle engagement. In any event, you probably need to do both injector cleaning and valve adjustment. Did you test your plug wires and check distributor?

Got me on that one! That's why I took mine to a mechanic.
Cap and rotor is what meant.

I'm an A%# HOLE!! it turns out that i put the wrong size connecting rod brgs in the truck...SOOOO riddle me this. how is it that a 22re w/ 165,000mi on it has a set of over sized brgs on the crank(meaning, the crank has already been turned) that are worn out.. idea#1 miles have been taken off the odo.. idea#2 when the timing chain broke through, the whole truck was rebuilt(most likley). idea#3 driven hard its whole life(maybe, but for good reason, i kinda f#$king doubt it).. here's to crossing your fingers for no reason!!!
THANKS S J83, THOOK, JIMBO, we'll see how it comes out.
