maybe the brushes wasn't the problem.

They have internal voltage regulators, and if that went bad, you will get a charge light becuase it will overcharge the system and fry your battery. Get it fixed ASAP.

if all your wiring is in good order and your terminals are clean and tight then something other than the brushes is wrong with the alt i would guess.

are you able to just change the voltage regulator on the back of the alternator.

Have you had the alternator tested since you replaced the brushes?

yeah you should get it tested...if you wanna just throw parts and $$$ at it till its fixed might as well go to the parts counter at the dealership and ask for a whole new alt...

not sure about the 88 but both the 85 and 86 have a point where the charge wire comes up to the fender and then is connected to the wire harness to go to right side of the truck mine was cruded up also i replaced one altenator and ended up blowing the charge fuse so make sure the fuse is good

Could be one of the copper windings has broken, causing an open circuit in part of the alternators charging field.

Make sure you have 12-12.6 volts going to the alt, the output should be around 14 volts. if its good then your voltage regulator should be too. Buy a cheap ammeter form Northern Tool and wrap it around your neg. cable and turn on everything inside and outside the car that will draw current. Headlights, wipers and ect. Check the amps being pulled by the alt. It should be around 50 to 60 amps, I would think.

battery terminals seemed to be in decent condition but decided to actually change them and voila the charge light no longer comes on. suppose sort of an idiot check but hey its better now.
