22RE 5-sp trans fluid level?

Just curious how to check the trans fluid level? Also, where is the fill hole? I've been looking though the factory service manual, but can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

Thanks!
Jordan

The fill plug is on the right side of the trans, its a bolt that you unscrew, the trans should be filled until the oil just starts coming out of the fill hole, then reinstall the plug.

Fill hole is on the side of the trans, about 1/2 way up pass side IIRC.

You check the fluid level by sticking your finger in there. The level should be to the bottom of the fill hole without spilling out.

Thanks, fellas. Oil level is fine. I guess my 5th gear is wearing out...

I thought about it, but when I checked the fluid level, the fluid looked crystal clear and didn't seem fouled at all. I may change it out anyways and see if that helps with the 5th gear whine.

The whining is caused by the burrs and worn edges on gears which have a lot of wear and tear. It can also be caused by low trans oil, and the gears that are at the top of the transmission are usually the ones that whine when the oil gets low and they are no longer coated in oil.

Typically the gears that get used the most start to whine first. Fifth gear gets used a lot on the freeways and highways, so it usually wears out first. This is all generally speaking, and not specific to these trucks.
