22re to to 3.4l conversion

Hey folks,

As the title says, pulling the 22re in my 87 4runner and replacing it with the 3.4l v6 is my next project.

I have complete access to a '90 4runner V6 3.0 and a T100 with the 3.4l(can't remember the year). What do I need from the '90 4runner besides the oil pan and motor mounts, can I use any accessories off of that engine (ps pump, ac pump, alternator)? Also can i use the 3.4l engine with the 3.0 transmission and the 22re transfer case? If I went that way would everything be bolt in?

Thanks guys

T-Case

You need an adapter for the R151 Chain TCase to the 22RE Gear TCase.

What tranny is in the 22RE 87 4Runner?
What tranny is in the 3.0 '90 4Runner?
What tranny is in the 3.4 T100?

The 3.4 will bolt to the 3.0 tranny, auto or manual. However, if the 3.4 is from an auto, and the 3.0 is from a 5spd (or vice versa)... you are going to have a few issues.

Also, the 3.0 trannies will bolt to 4cyl transfer cases but an adapter will be required.

Sounds like you need to do some "project management" first.

Write down WHAT you plan to do and then do the research to find out if its feasible...

Check outhe ORS site - that tells you alot about what they have worked out
-- radiator?
-- AC
-- PS
-- Motor Mounts
-- Trans (manual or auto)
-- ECU
-- wiring

and thats the obvious stuff...

IMHO - keep the engine and accessories from the 3.4L as much as possible.

You will need the p/s lines (if in good condition), the a/c lines going to the compressor, the top plate on the compressor, and the radiator all from the runner. I am in the middle of doin the same thing, 92 22r truck to a 5vz.

You will also need the p/s pump, the compressor pulley assembly, and the alternator off of the t-100.

You do realize that you will have to weld new frame motor mounts on, right? On the 22r trucks the frame mounts are to far foward, its not a huge deal but I'm just making sure that you know that.

If you end up using a r150, try to get an early one, not the taco one. It isnt that they work bad, but my problem is that if you get the adapter plate from marlin from the r150 to the gear drive t-case the one for the early trucks will let you rotate the t-case up 10 degrees, if you have a taco trans (or late runner) it will rotate it down 10 degrees b/c the output on their t-case is on the other side. Believe me, I found this out the hard way and I'm still waiting on my adapter plate to come back just so i can bolt it w/o any clocking.

The wiring part of it isnt to bad if you can read a ewd, here are some p/n's for the connectors that you will prob need...

Your C1 and C2 dash harness plugs are prob different, but that is the ones that I have used for my 92 truck. Of course you could just cut the 22r harness if you wanted to for the dash plugs, might make it a little easier anyways.

Here is another few links with some good info..

This will not be a bolt in swap, as I said before, you will need to weld on new frame mounts, and more than likely your crossmember wont work.
