how much difficulty is it to swap out the 22re in a 90 toyota pickup for a 2.7 from a 1998 toyota pickup? i can get a real good deal on the 98 that was rolled so i would have the donor truck.

 

not worth the effort IMO.

 

it would b time comsuming on the 2.7 the starter and battery are on the drivers side...and the front driveshaft is on the drivers side....intake on the left and exhaust on the passenger side.....no distributor it has coil packs

dont get my wrong cause i just bought a 97 with the 2.7 and i love it. it has more get up and go the my 20r

 

supercharge it! have a super quick fuel economical vehicle.

 

i just sold a 1984 toyota pickup with a 350 chevy motor ,transmission and transfer case with 4:11 rears installed. that thing had the get up and go,lol. if i could get a super deal on a transfer case adaptor to adapt my case to a chevy tranny i would install a 4.3 or a 5.7 chevy motor in my 1990 toyota,lol.

no but marlin crawler makes a bellhousing adapter for the R151 series transmissions!

 

Dont the 2.7s use a W series transmission? Im not positive, but wouldnt the w56 and xfer case with the pass drop from a 22re bolt up to the bellhousing of a 2.7?

 

I thought they would bolt up with the original behousing from the 2.7.
The 2.7 is more efficient, puts out better power, and has aftermarket forced induction kits available...

 

The 2.7's use the W59 transmission. Whether it will bolt to a W56 I don't know.

 

Again why bother. The 22RE is the best engine ever made!!!! Just because it is newer does not make it better. MHO

2.7 does have a power advantage and is a significantly more efficient design... As stated above, I believe it will bolt up with a bellhousing change.

I've seen one aftermarket turbo report on it. The dyno was over 300hp.. Not sure if that was pump gas.

I like the 22R series also, but there are limits to 8 valve heads...

 

Does anyone know if the 22R/22RE motor mounts are the same distance from the end of the bellhousing as those of the 3RZ? That would be a nice swap to get a more powerful toyota 4cyl in the older trucks.

 

the 2.7 bellhousing bolts up to the 22re manual tranny. Marlins board has a lot of info about it, I belive his son has done a bunch of them.
the 2.7 is capable of over 1000 hp def. something to think about, and it would still be a toy 4cyl

If you look at horsepower as your basis for a good engine then the 22re is not that good. It does have a very good torque curve for a truck though. I will agree that 8 valve's has its limitations and I think it would be even better if it where 16V. But the durability and design of these engines for trucks is awsome. The only reason that they use a 2.7 now is that they need a cross platform 4 cylinder engine for all their vehicals. The 2.7 is a front wheel drive designed car engine. Intake and exhaust on the same side. I bet it is a good engine but I like the engineering of the 22re.
