22re 1st gear bogging down until WOT
ello ello, so this problem has been bugging me for awhile.. heres the run down.
Washed my truck engine 2 nights ago at work, not a big deal.. i stayed away from the cap, washed it like normally.. let it sit for a hour or two before i went home from work. Leave the shop and notice that it has this low power/bogging at idle and first gear.
No biggie i think, just water somewhere.. itll go away like normal when the engine is wet. Any who, drive it home park it next morning.. the engine is cold runs and idles fine.. still seems a big sluggish in 1st gear unless im at wide open throttle. So let it sit all day at work and pulled the wire out of the cap just to make sure any water would evap over the day.. just in case there is any.. anywho, today same thing again, runs a bit sluggish when warmed up, engine bogs down to 600rpm, it seems like it wants to stall but it doesnt. It has tones of power in all other gears going at any speed.
Now, ive narrowed it down to a couple things.
http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t96103.html - guy in that forum seems to have a very similar problem to what im dealing with.
My TB is clean from readjusting my tps sensor a while ago. I may think my plugs could be fouled up again due to 400,000km engine buring all kinda stuff.
What about the idle air control valve? can it be cleaned? i can adjust my idle, but you never know because it only does it when warmed up. New fuel filter around 10k ago, newer cap and rotor. New o2 sensor 10k ago to.
Im kinda lost here, not sure what i should be looking at for such a intermittent problem. But ive never had it last for 2-3 days so far. What about the evap canister?
Thanks guys and gals

you guys in Canada have been posting a lot of idle problems... Uh, I've seen the weather up there... VERY cold there... You WASHED your engine in that cold?? What makes you think the water would evaporate, rather than freeze? Did you keep it indoors above 0 Celsius?
I'm wondering how your fuel reacts with the cold, and if that has anything to do with the idle. It got cold early, is your gasoline the Winter blend? Just a thought...

thats the thing, the shop heat is around 20*C and the last 4 days we've been sitting around 2-3*C..
Yea its been indoors, hmm thing is this is like the 3rd time this has ever happened to me in the last year.. so i know its not a constant problem..

and this only sarted happening when you washed the motor? if so, I'd say that rules out anything internal in the motor; has to be something externally, be it a cracked plug wire that's arcing in the moisture, water shot into and trapped in the TPS, moisture in the plug in for the AFM or ignitor; hell, maybe a vaccum line got knocked loose while washing it
cross your i's and dot your t's with all the electrical plugs, sensors, and vaccum lines before you jump to something internally with the engine

honestly, anyone got any ideas?
got some ngk wires and plugs thru work today for 50$.. love getting parts for cost..
i though the plugs would have done the trick but nope. PLugs also looked good to, i unplugged my egr vacume line and plugged both ends hoping that would do something but no luck. im going to remove it tomorrow. im going to check my air idle control and charcoal canister tomorrow to.

Aight bubba i have a 1994 toyota pickup 4WD with a 22re 2.4 in it.
And im having the same exact problems you are, But the thing is, with mine, it only happens when it rains or i wash the truck....
I know im getting some wires wet under the truck somewhere.
It runs AMAZING till it starts raining, or till i go play in a mud hole somewhere. Whenever you figure this problem out make sure you post it back on here so the rest of us can figure out what the heck is going on with our trucks, cause many many many people are having the same problem, but haven't been able to fix it.
Mine runs reallllllll sluggish Half trottle untill 2800 to 3300 rpms then it KICKS IN and feels like a shot of nitrous. When its dry outside, my truck will smoke the 33 trail blazers down, but when it starts actin up...Nothin.

This seems to be a common ongoing problem... I wish someone could find the cause...
I use to have the same thing with my 22re, but the problem disappeared during the engine rebuild, when I replaced A LOT of stuff, and not a lot is OEM any more, so who knows what fixed it
but my best edjucated guess would say the TPS or the AFM, just because of the symptoms, and the fact that it changes at WOT

I agree with bleeder. the only two things that affected my throttle response and lack there of was when i replaced the TPS and the AFM. The biggest difference was the AFM but it was swapped with the 82 supra unit. When i swapped the AFM the miss i had for years was gone and the throtle repsonse went back to better than normal. If there is a junk yard near you look around for a used AFM to swap in. It only cost me like 20 bucks when i found the supra one. Or if you have a buddy with a 22re try swapping his in to see if the AFM is actually the problem. The TPS is finnicky when water or mud or anything for that matter is introduced it spells trouble for the unit. So if the problem occurs when it rains and you get water in there well there's your answer. If you've checked the easy obvious stuff this is where i would direct my attention. Good luck! Keep us posted if and when you fix it.
