22r rod orientation question
I am helping a friend rebuild his 22r, I noticed the rod caps are marked 1,2,3,1(there is no #4) I am installing new Keith Black 9.7:1 pistons that have the valve relief cut in the top of them after getting them back from the machine shop I noticed that I would need to install them in a 1,3,2,1 orientation for the piston orientation to be correct...
which causes me to ask the question does it really matter what the orientation is when you are installing new pistons and new bearings on a 22r? unlike other engines where the rods are machined different depending on orientation...
Thanks for your help

This is the reply I got from engnbuilder (Ted) from an email I sent:
We see that a lot, the numbers don't relate to location, they relate to factory matching. Normally they will be withing a couple of grams of each other.
As long as they are in good condition, they may be used in any cylinder.

yup
the numbers stamped on the rods and pistons are for manufacturing purposes and have nothing to do with their location on the crank or in the engine
just make sure you don't mix up the end caps, and you at least face them in the right direction, and you'll be good to go
if you haven't done so yet, download the FSM through the link in my sig, and you'll have gobs of info like that
