22R Questions.

Hello All I just recently aquired an 86 pickup 4x4 for $1k. Its got some issues But it runs 4x4 works terriffic, and is cheap to drive.

I have a few questions about her though.

When driving her around and "goose it" it bogs down bucks, when you let back out of the gas it picks back up and runs fine.

Also its running hot I think, just yesterday I replaced the thermostat put in 180 degree and put new antifreeze in it but when I went out driving her today she ran at the top white line the whole time, never going into the red. I was going easy on her down some old dirt country roads and once I hit the pavement roads and could run 50+ miles per hour she cooled of just a touch, about the width of the needle on the gauge.

I am new to toyota trucks ive always had full size trucks but for what I baught her for I couldnt pass her up.

A little info on the truck its an 1986 regular cab 4x4. has smitty built tube bumpers and a 22R motor with 250K origional miles. It has what I am guessing to be an aftermarket carb with webster writtin on it. 5 Speed manual tranny, 4x4 works insanely good. Interrior is decent but still showing her true age. She leaks oil around what Im guessing is the timing cover. Shes pretty weak but will still hold 70mph in 5th gear with your foot to the floor board. It has 16" aftermarket wheels with new 245/75/16 all terrains.

Thanks for your help!

Alex

If its bogging down then its something with the fuel system / carburetor.
As for running hot, its very possible you got air in the coolent lines. The heater hoses are higher then the engine so they pick up air when you re-fill. Either wait for them to work themselves out or what I do is jack up the front end really high and run the engine with the radiator cap off. The bubble should come out, then just fill her up.

Check your fuel filter. with the carbed engine its super easy, 2 hose clamps, it should be on the passenger side by the rear wheel. At least thats where mine was

If it was also running hot before you changed the thermostat, most likely your radiator is partially clogged.

Get that sorted out ASAP. The aluminum heads on these engines won't tolerate being run hot.

At normal operating temperature the gauge in my 86 22R with a 180 t-stat points at the lower part of "p" in "temp." When my radiator became too plugged to handle the long drive home one blistering summer afternoon, I kept the needle from climbing too high by running the heater on full blast. Miserable, but it worked.

If this just started after you changed coolant, burp the air as kennyboy019 suggested.

Ill check the fuel filter one day this week and see if that helps. Could the timing be retarded some? I know its getting good fire now so it has to be the fuel system now. Also thanks for the tip on the bubble in the coolant lines.

So far I have done the following.

plugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor button, new 180 dergree thermostat, new coolant, oil and toyota oil filter. Shifter bushing And clutch bleeding is coming next weekend.

I am concerned about blowing a heat gasket and warping the heads....

We did do a radiator flush when we did the new coolant, it came out as clean as you please...... The radiator is NEW hadnt been in the truck long when I baught it, so it cant be clogged up.

I have not checked the timing, nor checked vavle lash. The motor is good and strong until it strats bogging and bucking. Once the motor warms up it still does the bogging and bucking but not half as bad...

Still need help guys. In the moring I'm going to crank it upa nd let it warm up and thermostat open up and see if the coolant is circulating. that will eliminate a bad water pump. Mabe it will let the bubble of air out if it is in there.

So I just opened the radiator cap and let the truck warm up to operationg temp and I guess the bubles came out i kept adding water till it was full... then i went and drove about 5 miles as hard as i could drive it and the temp gauge stayed at the bottom curve of the P in temp... So I guess the therostat is working and the radiator isnt pluged and the water pump is good. this si with a 180 degree thermostat.... So I guess I have my cooling problem fixed... Now for the carb/fuel issue.

Between the radiator and overflow thing, it took about 1/2 to 3/4 of a gallon....

but it is running alot cooler... i just got back from driving it again and it never got over to temp in the gauge....
