22r in place of 22re

So working on this 1988 22re I have I believe I’m lead to a bad block. From another friend he’s got an 83/84 or 85 22r truck with solid front axle that runs well but recently had a tree fall on it. He’s gonna sell me the truck for 500. Is it possible to use the 22r and swap over the intake and head from the 22re and get a running truck in mine w the bad block

How did you reach that conclusion?

The guy I bought truck from said his friend did the head gasket. I called his friend, 17 year Toyota tech, said he had the head redone, decked, valve job, new cam , the works at a shop I’ve heard of that’s reputable. He did the head gasket job and again, 12 miles later it overheated. He said he believed that since the owner let the truck overheat so many times before doing the gasket, with it leaking so soon, he believes it to be a warped deck. He said he put a machinist edge on the block and noticed some discrepancy but believed it to be close to spec. So I told a friend about this and he said he has and I can’t remember, either 83/84 or 85 solid axle 22r that he used regularly till a tree fell on it not long ago. Knowing I wanted the axle he said 500 for the truck.

You should find out which year 22R you might be getting.

The 1984 and earlier 22R engines have the "early" 22R block and head and your EFI will not bolt up. If your donor engine is the early style, a carbureted setup would be easiest to use.

The 1985-1995 22R and 22R-E engine blocks and heads are the same and your EFI system will bolt up.

Depending on how far from straight your current block is and how overheating has affected the block, it may still be usable.

I’m sure it could be decked, but then the motor needs rebuild. I’m just trying to get up and running

If you switch to a 22R you will need some mods to the fuel pump and a pressure regulator since EFI is 45psi and carbs use 6psi. Last I checked a good one was a over a hundred bucks. Also if you do decide to go with a carb be sure to save the engine wiring harness. I could use one for a megasquirt turbo project.

I would love to go carb but I’m afraid there’s too many sensors to bypass

If its an 84-85 and the frame is ok swap bodies and drive it.

Uh; no. All you have is the fuel pressure issue and distributor. Both are solvable. The 22r uses a mechanical pump on the camshaft, so all you need is a pickup assembly vice a in tank pump. Dizzy & parts should be findable if not LCE sells a standalone unit.

O2 stays, no action required.

Doesn’t the computer need input from the motor the 22r isn’t capable of?

The long blocks are the same. What changes are the Dizzy, intake w/ VAFM, exhaust, fuel tank / pump, & electronics. The 22R is right out of the 1960's. The Dizzy functions as camshaft / crankshaft sensor in one. Ultra modern EPA / CARB engines need both to pass along with other fancy parts.

Now if you want geekish; get a Megasquirt PNP2 and things get more ..... interesting.
