Is a 22R long block the same as a 22RE

Is the 22R and the 22RE long block the same? Heads? Can I simply take the EFI runners and plenum, and swap in onto a 22R head and block? Isn't there some complications with the EGR tho?

I ask because I am supposedly the "Toyota guy" in the family, and my uncle called and ask because I guess his buddy blew up his RE, and has found an R replacement, and wants to just swap his RE stuff on.

Any info would be appreciated

If its an 85 or newer 22r then yes you can. 84 and older have different deck and head heights to were it will not work though.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. The pre 85 had the 1/4" deck height difference, correct? Anyways, his is a 91 RE, and he found a 89 R. He wants to buy the 89 R and just swap on the EFI runners and plenum, and call it good. But isn't there a difference in EGR piping between the R and RE? I want to be able to call him back and give him the differences. I know the blocks are all the same for the R, RE, and RTE, but unsure of all the little tid bits.

Starting in 85, the 22r and 22re were both short block which means they are interchangeable.
So 85 and up in all interchangeable 85 and up
Prior to 85 the pickups were all carbureted and all long block.
84 and down is all interchangeable with 84 and down

To answer your question, yes he can do the conversion, there may be a few little quirks to work out here and there but nothing a little ingenuity couldnt take care of.

like stated they're interchangeable. If the egr piping is different use to piping from the re, it will bolt to the head as they are interchangeable..
