22r engine interchangeablility

I have a 1988 4runner with a 22re and a 5 speed. It’s a pretty sweet little rig especially for the price I paid for it (free!). It’s got a couple of issues, but the main one that bothers me is a rod knock (which is very odd since it only has 85,000 miles on it).

I am going to do a little inspection on the motor (pull oil pan and check the bearings out and such) before I do anything drastic, but I was thinking if something is marjorly gone I might pick up a used engine.

will a 22r, 20r, etc. just bolt into place and everything hook up? Does it matter what it comes out of? Basicaly what I am looking for is how broad of a search I can do for a used engine.

Thanks

Yes, a 22r will fit you just have to switch over all the fuel injection and exhaust.

20R will fit also, but I would stick with the 22r or 22re both great engines!

The motor will phyiscally drop in, yes.
The EFI may or may not swap over. There are 3 22r heads:
One not setup for EFI at all - they're not tapped and don't have mounting bosses.
One with mounting bosses, not tapped. You can tap and use EFI.
Latest 22R heads are already tapped and have mounting bosses.

The 20R head will not work at all with EFI. Round peg / square hole deal.
They have been used, but with a lot of tig welding and routing of engine coolant... Don't try it at home.

I'd get an EFI plenum gasket and line up the holes.
