22r Carburetor Tuning

In this the videomaker recommends 3 1/2 turns out for the idle screw and 2 1/2 turns out for the mixture screw.

I'm not so concerned about the idle screw because I just set that to get the correct idle. But would you agree that 2 1/2 turns out is a good baseline for the mixture screw? I know that the mixture screw is covered from the factory. On my truck a previous owner has drilled it open so that the mixture screw is accessible. I'd like to make sure I have it adjusted properly.

Many of you must have adjusted this mixture screw before. What do you think?

What year is your truck?

When I rebuilt my carburetor, I just left the idle speed screw alone until it was time for adjustment, so I do not know how many turns that screw was.

Toyota seems to have changed the baseline "number of turns" for the mixture screw. I have seen 2 1/2 turns used the most but my 1987 Factory Service Manual shows 3 1/2 turns.

I just checked the carburetor rebuild kit I have and it also shows for '84-'88 at 3 1/2 turns.

This setting will probably need to be adjusted, as the number of turns is just a starting point. The Factory Service Manual shows the procedure. My camera battery died, otherwise I would post pictures.

If you don't have an exhaust gas analyzer , you just have to adjust for drivability.

Mine is a 1986 4x4 xtracab. I didn't realize that any of their manuals gave any designation for mixture screw settings. My Haynes manual just states something along the lines of "the mixture screw is sealed from the factory and does not require adjustment" and that's it. I think I'll turn mine until it bottoms out and count the number of turns it took to get there. Will give me an idea of where the previous owner had it set.

Hello everyone have and 87 fully rebuilt with bigger cam. Put on a Weber 32/36. Has any one upgraded the filter to this could you tell a difference in performance

I don't think there will be a difference in performance an a 22R series engine, unless it is heavily modified. I think these are more for show when you open the hood than a performance increase.

If this takes the place of the original air cleaner setup (with intake tube behind the grill) you will be sucking warm air into the engine.

This filter looks a lot better than the standard rectangular filter you usually see when people convert to a Weber carburetor though.

No you would not notice any difference in performance. No air filter will change performance. That's just marketing nonsense. Theoretically air filters can change performance if they are less restrictive and higher flowing but it's so extremely minute that you would never ever notice it. But I'm sure that filter will clean intake air just fine!

Altitude make a difference on mixture, so it is not possible to just take someone's word for the exact number of turns. Good luck!
