22R Carb rebuild problem

Hey guys ive got the carb from my 22R rebuilt and almost ready to go back on the truck. But ive ran into one little problem. The metering needle. It has a spring on the shaft where it bolts into the carb body. the FSM says to hook the spring into the hole. The hole i see to hook it in. But i cant get it to stay. I was wondering if i was putting it on backwards or am i just missing something. Ive tried for several hours on this one freakin spring and i cant get it to stay hooked. Please help. Ive included pics of what im talking about if you cant understand. Thanks

the pics a little fuzzy, so im guessing here.
id say that some pre-tension is required on the spring (wind it first) before it stays locked in poisition.
