22R burnt valve or something else?

I recently bought a 1988 carbureted 22R 4x2 that needed some work. It was ticking and missing at idle so I adjusted the valves. I found that a couple of the valves had very little clearance. It is still missing and ticking, and I am thinking that one of the valves is burned. I can feel a consistant "puff" out of the exhaust when I feel near the tailpipe and the engine wobbles quite a bit. When I rev it up it will stop wobbling around 2000 RPMs. It runs ok when I am driving it and has sufficient power. I would think that a burned valve would cause a significant power decrease. Is it possible to have a burned valve without a significant power decrease? I am going to do a compression check tomorrow. Any suggestions on what else I should check?

Did you do the vlave adjustment according to the service manual? If not, i would get one and do it again. Engine at operating temp, crank set at 0 TDC, rotate 180 and repeat on opposite valves, etc.

I did it exactly as the service manual said. I actually did it twice to be sure. The engine was warmed up both times. I adjusted the exhaust valves to .012 and the intake valves to .008.

I just checked the compression and it is good. The spark plugs also appear to be good. I also checked the resistance in the wires and they are all withing specs. The fuel cut solenoid on the carburetor works. I am thinking that there is a possible vacuum leak. Any other suggestions?
