22-REC...check engine light codes and lack of power question

replace the mass airflow sensor - go to any local pick and pull and you can get the entire top of the airbox assembly for 10-15 dollars

mine ran exactly the same, i replaced everything you did and concluded that MAF was the problem

Huh?

If the Air Flow Meter (AFM) (Mass Air Flow Sensors were not used on trucks til Tacomas came along in '95)were bad it would affect all cylinders equally.

As far as #3cyl running rich, Man That's a tough one. If the injector Is not the problem I guess it would be wise to check the wiring. Although since the injectors are essentially wired together I can't see how that would be the problem unless that injector is connected to the wrong connector (saw that once on a Nissan 300zx). If something were wrong to prevent enough air from entering that cylinder like a wiped cam lobe or plugged intake port (neither of which I've ever seen on a 22R), that would give the same results as too much fuel.

For some background info this is an 88 4x4 Deluxe Extra Cab with a 22-REC. It has about 160K on it and I just finished replaced the cylinder head (cracked) and the timing chain/guides. I set the timing to 5 deg BTDC as per the Haynes manual I have and installed new plug/rotor/wires/dist cap/knock sensor/oil pres sensor/water temp sensor. When I took it out for a test drive it seems to have very little power. I know it?s a 4-banger but it should be able to at least get out of its own way. I initially thought it was a clogged catalytic converter but I cut it off and it runs better but still leaves a lot to be desired.

Your code 51 points to a mis adjusted throttle position sensor and when you jump it and set timing,. the TPS has aldready advanced timing, so when you set it, you are basically setting it for ATDC instead of BTDC robbing all your horsies. Rotate the TPS CCW until you can audibly hear the engien RPMS coem down when you install the jumper to set timing. Then you will have power again. Code 42 wont be an issue here.

it turns out there was a corroded wire that ran to the #1 and #3 injector....runs like a champ now....

I am having a similar type of trouble and am curious if this cleared the codes or if it is just running right now regardless of codes?
