1st Generation 4runner Fuel Sending Unit ?

I'm looking for a sending unit for my '87 22re, and the stealership wants the vin # to know which variation I need. I'd like to get the sending unit used (cheaper). How many variations could there be for this model? I'd found a couple of used ones, but I don't know if they'd work or not according to the stealership's criteria. Seems to me there should only be one kind of sending unit for a 1st generation 22re with manual tranny. I know the sr5 had the extra wire, but I don't think that's a big deal.

Did you ask the dealer what the differences are between the different sending units ?, I know some have a sensor on them for the low fuel light, but other than that i don`t know.

There were at least two different sized gas tanks, deeper one is the 17 gal., smaller one is 14 gal. So that would be a difference in the height of the sender.

Didn`t the 4Runners get the larger tanks ?, or was it an SR5 option only ?.

Have seen .85 with both size tanks. Mine (SR5) has a 17g. tank and a buddy has a non-SR5 w/ 14g. tank.

My 4Runner is an SR5 also, so i would assume it has a 17 gallon tank also.

Difference is fairly obvious, the deeper 17g. tank hangs below the frame over 3",

The shallower 14g. tank is only about an inch or so below the frame.
