1st Gen 4runner: Top put on today, rear window won't move...

Hi guys,

So I put my top back on after a summer of fun, and my rear window will not move when I turn the key in the rear door.

I had the bolt on the switch actuator, and even took it out and manually held it down as I turned the key.

I hear the "click" from the relay behind the drivers door as I turn the key in the rear door (while pressing down the switch).

I checked out 4crawlers site and can't see a similar scenario.

It always worked before.

Any clues where to start next?

Did you have a softop on during the summer? Or did the window stay down all summer?

Will it go up from the switch in the console? If so, then it's probably the connector in the door to the switch. It is notorious for pulling apart or unplugging.

Did you make sure to put the bolt in on the drivers side that acts like a switch allowing you to roll the widow back up?

@ Monch - I only tried the key in the door - not the up front cab switch. however, I hear the relay going, so it's sending a signal. When I am not pressing the actuator switch (that a bolt holds down when the top is installed), and turn the key, I hear nothing from the relay. No soft top but the window was down all summer - do you mean that the plug INSIDE the rear door comes loose sometimes? The rear door lock does not move when I turn the key (usually happens right before the window starts going up).

@ swimmerboy - yes, the actuator switch is depressed - I tried it first with the bolt installed, then removed it and manually pressed with my hand while turning the key.

Could it be a circuit breaker that needs trippeed? If it were, would the relay still be going?

is the rear wiper blade all the way up? I've noticed on mine that there is some fail-safe circuit that keeps the rear window from rolling down if the wiper is not all the way up (and it doesn't go all the way up by itself when it's turned off, you have to physically move it)

mess with your wiper. If the sensor doesn't think its all the way up, the window won't move.

*edit* dang, beat me to it.

sounds like you got everything else covered.

Thanks everyone for chiming in so fast!

So, embarassing as this is, it turned out that the mount for the actuator (that the bolt holds down when the top is on) had been ben outward, which didn't allow the bolt to make contact with the switch. I bent it back, and POW! it works....
sigh....sorry guys - I swear it had been making contact in my earlier troubleshooting trials.

Now I just need to figure out my passenger window wiring issue

Glad you got that sorted out. I'm having a similar issue with mine, so I'll have to check that bolt out again.

I feel dumb for not figuring it out sooner, but glad this other troubleshooting information was shared for others (and me later if it stops working again!).

Love your build BTW - great work!
