I would normally say no way, but the cup holders!!! sniff... a tear...
anyway, you gotta watch out a bit on this; there are two diff 1st gen consoles apparenty. I found this out the hard way, when trying to get a new top lid for mine , from the yota dealer. One is a complete, alltogether thing, that also fitsup to , and around , the shifters. the other is has a removable inner piece, while the rest of the back of the console just sits there. this would be the ideal one to have, as you could just remove that back section/inner part.
Still would have to deal with the switches though.

dremel + some extra wire = switch problem solved. there is plenty of dash space to install switches. if i ever get 2 seconds to breath im gonna go out and do that. school and work sucks.

yes, there are 2 pieces to the original console, the part that goes around the tranny and tc shifters with the boot and the actual console wiith storage.

Awesome idea! Im seriously considering this console for my runner because mine is done! I was wondering if you could post some more installed pics and maybe some of the modification you did with the rear cup holders. My rear seat basically stays laying down.

Ive been looking for a solution like this for a while. Im glad someone finally found a premanufactured one that will work.

will do man! gotta find my camera charger.

i finally installed the window lock and rear wiper switches in the dash, no i just need to glue them in (cut the opening a tad big dang it). now the up/down sits where the rear deck light switch was and to the right are the other 2 switches... had to reposition the dimmer switch too (it will be getting repositioned again once im not pressed for time) pics soon!

so after using this console for over a year i must say that id choose a different one. the hinge between the lids has been the cause of many bruised elbows and much profanity. if you think about doing this, get this http://www.jcwhitney.com/padded-viny.../p2007498.jcwx instead.

center console

i don't know how old your center console post is, but I'm looking into doing the same thing. I noticed at the end that you said that you would not buy the one that you have again and you would buy another one, the link doesnt work though. What console would you buy instead? I have a 86 4runner sr5. I've been doing alot of custom interior work, i already started moving the switches into the dash. Was there anything you would do different if you were to move the switches again?

thanks yota, that is the right link.

nick, check the link yota posted for the other console id use. i prefer the storage of the console that i used but the amount of times ive bashed my elbow on the hinge makes me want to use the other one which also doesnt require any modification (so the seats will fold flat). i cant think of anything different other than using cut off wheels on a dremel instead of the cutting bit. that will give you straighter lines. actually now i dont even need the switches as the window lock and up/down switch are obsolete since i had to wire in a custom switch. if you want anymore pictures or anything feel free to ask.

Thanks for the post on this. I have an 87 extended cab 4x4 w/ 22RE and auto and I have many times wanted a console (especially when my coffee cup turned over spiiling my coffee!!!!!). I looked at a used one from a gen2 4runner and after the bad reviews ive seen on here decided to pass. I even looked at one at walmart (OMG!!!!!0,0). I'm gonna check this one out and see if i can maek one fit. if i do i'll take picks and post on here...............

I don't think it will work in mine, but I have a twin stick and Celica seats. My measurements are 8" width (bolster to bolster) and about 23" from the folded back seat to the twin sticks. I think I need something less than 21" log to not be in the way.

jcwhitney dimensions 23-1/2"L x 8-1/2"W x 9"H (12-1/2" in back)

Been looking for a while though.

Thanks!

I actually just scored an ammo box, but haven't tried it out for size yet. Any mounting tips? Did you use the OEM holes or drill new ones?

A 40mm ammo can will fit perfectly between bucket seats. I used the holes from the OE console to mount it to the floor.

Ammo can conversion instructions are here:
http://aggdefsol.com/blog/2009/03/si...ck-locker-box/

I had a soft top so no need for switches...no help since I didn't have to relocate.

Autozone "wedge" cupholder fits perfectly in the door pocket for $7 (can be seen on the left edge of first picture i door pocket). All problems solved!

another console that works could is this one from Smittybilt:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sm...FQmDfgodTAIADQ
very similar to a Tuffy console (not the same I know, but does the job at 1/3 the cost)
http://www.4wd.com/Jeep-Interior-Par...t_pn=TFY033-01
mine has been great, it is secure with the top off and have doors on during the summer months

just offering it up as an alternative
