Hello-
I used the my AC in my 88 22-RE for the first time the other day. It was super cold and blows hard. The only problem is that in stop and go traffic, the temp started getting close to red. I turned off the AC and it went down to normal (about half way). The only other time the temp has gotten high was on the beach a couple of weeks ago when I was cruisin slow in 4wd through some deepish sand. No AC that time so I stopped the truck for a while to let it cool down. Other than these times, the truck holds a nice medium temp well in all weather conditions. I guess my question is....Is this common for the 22-re, and can I do anything about it? New Radiator? Electric fan? Different kind of water pump? What I worry about is having overheating trouble on some future off roading trip where the engine is working hard at low speeds. Thanks!

Do you ever drive throught deep muddy water?
Dirt can get packed in the fins of the radiator reducing air flow.

Have you tested the coolant lately?

I can only remember once where my temp needle has even moved up from normal, and it was pully 3K up a steep hill at 4K RPM and 90 outside....And then only at the very very top of the 5 mile pull did it move... That was also with the stock 2-core.... I would look at cleaning it, if its clean...replace it.. radiatorbarn has them for a pretty good price, I just ordered a 3-core HD for $115, no tax, no shipping....

No mud that I know of. I will check out the rad needs to be cleaned. Is that 3 core a direct replacement?

22re's typically do not run hot. it sounds like you need a new fan clutch #16210-38060 ATM 16210-38050 MTM. check the usual t-stat radiator flow. use only a factory t-stat #90916-03078. good luck!!!!!!!!

what about an electric fan replacement? is that a good idea? I know they free up a little gas mileage/hp.
