1st Gen 4runner for a reliable wheeler?
Hey guys, I've been hanging around 4 a while. I'm intrested in 84-85 runner or 1st generation SAS 2 become my wheeler and some DD. Are these things reliable or they gonna nickle and dime me 2 death. Lookin at putting 5-6 grand into it. I don't want something that will leave me stranded on the trail. Right now I wheel my 100 in sum pretty rough places and I don't wanna tear her up 2 bad. But I may just put more body armour on my 100. Oh yea how good are these things off road. 22re or 3.0..Few pix of my 100..Thx Tim

Nice LC...the trucks are getting old, no getting around that but good deals are out there for a good base to build on. For 5-6K you can probably find one already built and have some left to fix it...The 3.0 debate is a long one. Personally I like the 22RE, if taken care of they are bullet proof...
Good luck on your search...

I like them both. I wonder if there are still available truck parts and accessories for both trucks?

Welcome to YT.
I think the 1st gen runners are great choices for trail vehicles.
The 4CYL is probably the best for trails, but won't get you to the starting point from home very quickly. Generally more reliable than the 3.0, easier to work on and less to worry about. Evidently they handle flops and rolls much better as well. Most will have gear driven transfer cases, which is important for lowering your gear or adding a second transfer case.
I'd recommend getting a '86 or newer. Even though the '85's come with EFI and a straight axle, there are lot's of upgrades needs for suspension performance and steering strength. In many ways, putting an SAS on an '86 and up puts you in a better position.
Just need to plan ahead and create your ultimate goal on paper. Figure out tires size, gearing required to run them, lockers, upgraded internal axles (Longfields), armor... etc. Then see what's left in your budget, and go shopping for a nice 1st Gen.
