I have a mostly stock 1st gen, not my typical commuter but when one car breaks down I start driving it to work until I get the other one running. Anywho it seems like every time that happens I get pulled over by the hy po like clock work. Always let me off with a warning, typically its my cracked windshield or I was going 5 over, or today it was my “loud exhaust” (stock muffler) 😂 I can blow past them going 10-15 over in my Vibe and nothing. Something about this old Toyota just makes the South Dakota Staties perk up. Curious if anyone else has had the same issue?

 

No, never in Massachusetts. But I do get followed by people who want a better look at my 4runner or to take pictures or ask what it is.

 

People are always asking if my Toyotas are for sale.

Same here. I had a guy at a stop light driving an 85 wanting to buy my 86 as he says he collects them. A few days later guy in a new Dodge truck said he has cash to buy it now. It tell them the age and mileage and they say they don't care, they just want a small truck.

 

I’ve had one guy in town roll up and say, “Will you sell me that truck?!”
I gave him my address and said, “Bring your checkbook. The first number is a 2.”
He hasn’t arrived yet.

 

Fricken a. Fix your windshield. Stop giving them a reason to pull you over. lol

 

Nope. Mine is just boringly stock. Around here, the only time I see a car pulled over is on the freeway (state hiway so CHP jurisdict). If the cops city and state would/could enforce muffler, tint, lights, etc. public nuisance and safety violations, they could pull in megabucks for the city coffers.

 

I notice you mention you are in South Dakota. I can tell you from past experience, not in a 4Runner, but another sort of older vehicle that I have been pulled over for the most ridiculous reasons in that state. One being 'dangly things hanging from the mirror.' So you might check that one off your list and make sure you don't have ANYTHING near your windshield. Don't give them any extra reasons to pull you over or they will. I mean as you have stated loud exhaust from a stock muffler? I think they are just bored and looking for someone to hassle or maybe they are extremely jealous of your awesome rig.

 

Yeah I’ve had the mirror thing before too. Glad I’m not the only one.
