1995 4runner A/C not working

I just charged my ac on my 95 4runner and the compressor will not turn on. I had to jump the compressor to take a charge and the air blowes cold when jumped. When the ac button is pushed in it does not light up or turn on the compressor. There is no power at the ac switch with the ignition and fan on. Any ideas were to look for a problem?

IIRC there is a fuse located under your glove compartment and on the blower housing that will blow and cause the symptoms you describe. If you replace it, switch on your ac to see if it blows immediatelly. You might get a quick green flash on the switch and then nothing again. In that case you will need to look for the cause. On mine it turned out to be the wire running to the ac clutch. The insulation had become brittle and flaked off. I smeared some of the liquid insulation goo on it and it has been fine since.

ok how does one evacuate the air from the AC system? Can I just go to wally world and get the el cheapo charge up kit and charge the system with air in it, or do I have to establish a vacuum first?

my AC blew a little while ago and i had toyota evaluate it. they wanted $1700 to fix it. everything blew to smitherines. i need a new compressor, clutch, wires, everything. so my guess is that if you just replaced the compressor, then you might have an issue with your clutch. good luck.
