1993 T100 valve cover replace

I have a 1993 T100 4x4 5sp. It is leaking oil around valve covers. Hope it’s not main seal too. Is this a job for an amateur or best left to the pros? What else should be replaced while doing this job?

3-liter v-6?

Here's the '93 4runner manual; in my (limited) experience the valve covers are the same as the T100. http://web.archive.org/web/201208130...68cylinder.pdf Page 80.

The valve covers are pretty straightforward, so unless you're really uncertain in your ability it's a pretty good place to start. You should get your engine bay sparkling clean first, so that you can see where the leak really is (gravity is not your friend; every leak ends up looking like the main seal.) Get some spray degreaser from the parts store, and your garden hose.

The most important part of replacing the valve cover gaskets is to follow the directions regarding putting RTV in the corners. I recommend getting the sealing surface VERY clean before the RTV; RTV doesn't stick well to an oily surface.

You'll need to remove the plenum (upper intake manifold) to get in there. You'll need a new plenum gasket. You should also replace the PCV valve (it's almost impossible to get to with the plenum on). You'll almost certainly have to replace the grommet for the PCV valve (90480-18001). Check the hose to the PCV valve; if it's in marginal shape now is the time to replace it. 12261-65010 (don't try using "plain" vacuum hose; the turn is too sharp and it will just kink.)

Don't forget that as you are removing parts to get to the valve covers, some 25-yr old piece of something could break. And you'll just have to make a trip and replace it. You can get a head start, of course, look closely at the parts you know will come off, and decide if they look good or bad.

Does anybody have the torque specs and bolt tightening pattern on the valve covers, plenum, and throttle Body on the 1993 3.0 v6?

Personally, I got a 1/4" drive torque wrench https://www.harborfreight.com/14-in-...nch-61277.html for the valve cover bolts (and my bicycles, etc ...) You're not going to be able to read 48 inch-lbs on a 1/2" drive wrench. These are steel bolts into tiny hole in an aluminum head -- very easy to over-torque.
