Hey guys I need to replace the speedo cable on my 1991 4x4 manual transmission. I looked on the forum here and could not locate a write up. I am new so please go easy. I am not real good at searching. Could someone shoot me a link with pictures please. Thanks. Oh yeah 22re engine.

I'm looking for help with this as well. It's detached at both ends, all the clips, etc. The part I'm stuck on is where it goes through the metal piece in the floor that is shared with the E-brake cable.

 

Are you sure this is the Speedometer Cable? It does not go through the floor and is not shared with your E-brake, at least on the 1991 model.

It runs through your firewall behind your Instrument Cluster and attaches there. You need to completely remove your Cluster and attach it there. A pain in the a## but necessary.

 

Yes, the speedometer cable. The dash is out, cluster, etc. Disconnected at the transfer case also.
This piece is the issue:

 

The Speedometer Cable does not go through this metal piece on the floor. Look in your engine compartment, the back firewall, feed the new cable through the same hole you pulled it out of, it attaches directly behind your speedometer on your cluster. I am not sure what that is a picture of. What year is your truck?

 

Are you sure you are working with your speedometer cable? Send me a photo.

 

Absolutely 100% positive. It is a mechanical speedometer cable. I disconnected it from the back of the gauges and the other end from the speedo gear on the transfer case... I'm positive. This is the cable, and it goes through that piece at the bottom of the firewall. The other cable going through the same metal piece is to the E-brake.

 

Sorry, I am still trying to wrap my head around this. The Speedometer Cable attaches to the transmission, not the Transfer Case, and then to the back of the Speedometer in the middle of Cluster.

It screws into the right side of the ManualTransmission, facing front. It then snaps into the back of the Speedometer.

Can anyone else help out with this?

What year is your truck? Do you have an automatic or manual?

 

On a 90-91 model, manual trans. 4x4, the speedo cable attaches to the rear of the transfer case on passenger side.

 

So does anyone have the method for getting the new cable through this plate on the floor? I have the same plate/problem. Thanks.

 

The plate is part of the cable, it bolts to the floor. You need to disconnect the ebrake cable and feed it through the floor. Then install the speedo and reinstall the ebrake cable.

 

Ah, ha....that makes so much more sense now. I kept thinking that both cables just passed through that bracket and that I was going to have to find a way to fit one of the big ends of the speedometer cable through it. "Light bulb"!! Thanks for your help. I guess I would have figured that out when I picked up my new cable tomorrow.
