1990 toyota v6 hot start problem

its been going on ever since i got it. it will start fine when it cold. when its hot it will idle very low (500 rpms or less) and some times sputter when i give it gas, other times it will just stall completely and then when i start it again, even it i give it full gas it will idle at about 200 rmps. when it does this there is a bit of pining goin on to. after i am able to get it started warm it runs great until i turn it off.

i've replaced the mass air flow meter (200 bucks!!!) and the coolant temp sensor.

im thinking its my fuel pump or something vacum related(possibly bvsv valve?)

i need help ASAP!

I think a new CSI time switch and a coolant flush is what solved mine, I had a similar issue. However, a few months later I got roughly the same problem and it turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator.

a new CSi switch would make sense if i had trouble with cold starts. but it starts perfect when its cold. when it warms up it idles low and stalls some times. its actually not even a starting problem its a staying running problem when its warm.

Well what I was getting at with the time switch is that it could be faulty causing the CSI to fire when it doesn't need to, causing it too flood.

In case you do not know how to check the FPR, simply pull the SMALL hose off the top and leave it off for maybe 5min, truck running of course. If fuel starts dripping out, replace it. Just be careful to pull off the correct hose…

My symptoms were long hard starts, rough idle, stalling at stop lights etc. it does not entirely sound like we have similar issues but its worth a check I guess.

I have a similar issue.. sometimes when starting the truck after driving to school and letting it sit for a couple hours the truck will idle real low and fluctuate between 100 rpm and 500 rpm, then die when put in gear unless I rev it up to 2000 rpm upon cranking and let it idle high like that for 10 seconds or so. Long sentence. Sounds similar to OP but is not entirely the same as it doesn't really sputter if you catch the throttle right and also there's no pinning. The problem started one rainy day and came back a few months later, and has been intermittent since. Though it's been happening more lately. It idles normally around 800, which seems sorta low.

I'll check the fuel pressure stuff too, see what's up

i checked my FPR and its no that :/. i really have no idea what it could be. on the way home from work it cut out at 2500 rpm's for a second then just kept going like nothing happened.

my symptoms are now: cutting out while driving. low idle when warm. and some times stalling on warm starts.

i think i may have figured it out. i've left this part out about my truck. it has a 22 gallon nas car west fuel cell. the fuel pump wires are rite on the top of the tank. when it stalled on me and wouldn't start. it cranked it cranked it and there was nothing, it was like it was out of gas. then i disconnected and reconnected the wires to the fuel pump and tried to start it again. it fired rite up and idled prefect. does that sound like a bad fuel pump? or maybe the wiring to it??

seems like its the wiring but to make sure get yourself a pressure tester Autozone rents them for a $100 refundable fee. When you do check it check it before you get to the fuel filter so you get an accurate reading.
I say this because i had the same problem with my tacoma and went an entire year thinking it was something else because i tested the fuel pressure in the wrong spot and the fuel filter was holding the pressure making it seem like nothing was wrong with the fuel pump.
Good luck and I hope you find the problem with it.
