In your first paragraph, you talked about your key-tumbler.
Is you problem:
Key wont turn to 'start' position?
Starter wont spin?
Engine won't fire?

Need input, need input, no disassemble!!

so you put the key in, turn it... the steering wheel unlocks (so you can spin it) but nothing happens with the starter?

If you've got a voltmeter, pull the small wire off the starter and set the meter to the appropriate range to read 15v (some have a 20v range, digital meters may have an 'auto' range or just read automatically), and put the + (red) lead into the connector on the small plug you just disconnected and the - (black) lead to the battery negative (or a ground somewhere) and have someone turn the key to start the truck.

If you get a voltage reading on the meter, the switch is sending voltage to the starter but the starter isn't running. If that's the case, make a jumper wire from the + terminal on the battery down to the terminal you disconnected and see if the starter spins with full battery voltage applied.
If it does spin, the ignition switch (the switch, not the tumbler) may need replaced.
If it doesn't spin, the starter is probably needing work. You can replace the contacts in the starter, but replacing the starter itself may be quicker (and will cost more than replacing the contacts).
If you don't get a voltage reading, the ignition switch needs replaced, then go back and test again.

the tumbler stays in the "on" position and you have to manually bring it to the "run" position. This for two months we have owned the car did not present any problems. However, it was mentioned that the ignition switch might have "gone". We could also have a faulty starter as someone else suggested. We are hoping this is not the problem.

the ignition switch has 4 positions: off, acc, run and start.
the first 3 are sticky, meaning you turn the key there, it stays.... 'start' is a temporary position and spring loaded and returns the key to the run position when the key is released.
...so I'm now confused.

so like I mentioned, check that you get voltage at the small wire on the starter when you turn the key to start. If you don't, the problem is most likely the ignition switch. If you do, the problem is most likely with the starter.

Red face

Sorry to confuse when you turn the key to the start position it does not return to the run position it will stay there you have to manually bring it back to the run position.

that, in and of itself, implies there's an issue with the switch (not to be confused with the tumbler- the part you put the key in).
