1987 HunterRunner's build up thread

Well I picked up this 4runner the other day cause I have always wanted one and I wanted a fixer upper. And thats exactly what I got.

So when I got it I noticed the speedometer wasn't working and 3rd gear syncro was gone, and those two things are going to be my first project.

Today I replaced the speedo gear in the tcase. Nice and easy job.

Found this part at a local Toyota dealer. Cost $30

This is where the speedo cable goes into the Tcase.

Unscrew The speedo cable from the the Tcase.

Loosen and remove the bolt below the speedo gear.

Take a Pry bar and work the the gear out. Its in there tight. I also used some vise grips to help get a grip on it. Dont worry it will come out.

This is what it looks like when you get it out. There is a O-ring and a clip on it that need to be replaced at the same time. Should have come with the speedo gear.

Its hard to tell in this picture but the teeth are worn down.

To remove the gear from the housing there is a clip about mid way up the housing. Take it off and the gear should slide right out.

Remember to replace the O-ring. Next slide the new gear in and replace the clip to hold it in the housing.

This is what it looks like back in the housing.

Install it back in by just tapping on the housing. Not hard tho, you dont want to mess up your threads. Tap it down till it stops.

Replace the bolt and and line the speedo cable up with the notch in the gear and tighten it up.

Thats it. Now go for a test drive and see if it works. Hopefully yours will look like this

Next Im trying to find a transmission, so that will be my next project.
Hope this will help anybody that dosnt know how to replace the speedo gear.

I like your little project...Welcome to yotatech.

I'm like you, I always plan out my projects. I bet you can find a good tranny around Georgia, but if you have no luck MarlinCrawler will have a new one.

Just make sure you get the exact same speedo gear or your speed will be off.
I should really do the same.
I found a couple different sizes of speedo gears, one of which i believe will put my 4.88/33's/5 speed combo back to stock reading (as opposed to 7% off all the time).

Yeah i plan on doing this again when I do the same combo. Just don't have the funds to do that just yet.

Bye-Bye 87 Hello 85

Well its almost been a year since my last post and that's cause I totaled my 4runner! . It happen back in May 2012. I was heading south bound and a lady in a Ford Turd was heading north bound and she decided to she was going to turn in her driveway right in front of me. So I hit here doing about 45mph and supn her around up into her driveway. Long story short her insurance company ended up giving me $2600 and I only gave like a $1000 for it.Name: IMG_0849.jpg

So for the last year I have been on the look out for an 1985 4runner sr5 with a 22re and a 5speed. Well I finally found one that wasn't completely destroyed and that didn't cost $10k. Its still a fixer upper like I want so I could build it the way I wanted it. So it looks like I will be moving over to the 84-85 build thread.
