Question 1986 interior help!!!

So a few years ago I bought a 1986 single cab five speed 4x4 with a 22r no ac and manual everythin with only 92k original miles for $500; and I am in the process of redoing it from the frame up. But I want to build a new headliner for it out of something like diamond plate to match the door panels. has anyone ever seen this done? Or is it even possible to do so without taking up the much needed head room in suck a small truck interior? I would really appreciate any tips; opinions and pictures of diy headliners thanks in advance!!

Never seen that done. I would make a template with thick cardboard or something of the sort first to see if it's worth the loss of headroom. I'm sitting in my 86 4Runner right now looking up. You would be bringing the ceiling down to the top of the windows essentially. I'm 5'6" and that would put the ceiling just a few inches over my head. If your good with a saw and geometry you could custom fit it which would look cool if you did a good job.

im a pipe fitter by trade so the fab work wont be to much of a problem I just don't want to spend one weekend doing it and it turn out to be a rattaling headache. somebody told me yesterday that they had seen a yota that somebody had bought sheets of abs plactic and molded it o the roof line with a heat gun I just wonder how strong that stuff would be in two or three years down here in the south bama sun

They make a garage floor mat that's diamond plate. And since it's rubber you won't crack your skull if you take it offroad. Just a thought.

awesome build slacker! it will be a while before I get to work on mine again; because I just got a call sayin I have to be in Arkansas Monday morning for a couple weeks for work. If I was to try the fiber glass backer what brand materials would you recommend. I am considering making a mold of the roof with abs and a heat gun and go from there with the fiberglass.
