1986 4runner shifting problem?

ok so i just got back from wheeling and i noticed on my drive back to my house my 4runner was having a difficult time shifting and it was screaching like a belt would. I pulled over and checked the tranny fluid and it was fine. So i set on the side of the road for a while then tried to go down the road and it started to shift fine after that i got home i decided to drive it again it shifted fine for a little bit but then began to act up again but no screaching this time? Anyone have any idea what part of the tranny is messing up? It's an 86' 4runner automatic transmission, also im not sure if this is anything that could of messed up shifting but while wheeling i came close to overheating.

Is the tranny cooler in good shape? You might have over heated the tranny, if so you'll need to flush the burned fluid out and refill it. Does the fluid smell or taste burned?

edit: You really should not taste the fluid..... it's something my grandfather taught me years ago. I'd say don't taste it just smell it. (oops)

Run outside and check the fluid. If it looks blackened or smells burned that will let you know what happened. If it's fine then post back up and I'll do what I can to help.

edit again: I need to stop typing so fast. Burned fluid will smell like rotten eggs, or at least it did in my Ford when I fried the C6.

no fluid is fine it does the first couple of shifts fine but you get up to 40-50 mph and it's not shifting just running really high rpms like 4,000-5,000

That sounds like a torque converter issue.
