175 miles to a tank?

Ok now i have seen people posting about thier mileage, but this is rubberdiculous! I got about 10.7 MPG on my last 2 tanks of gas. this was the only time i ever filled the tank i usually just put 5 bucks in every day. I have seen people say on here that they get 20mpg on thier 3.0 4runners, but i am in disbelief! I went through emissions a month ago and it read zeros all accross the board. I do have an EGR CEL code but i dont believe this reduces mileage. Any thoughts? And whoever gets 20mpg in thier 3.0 4runner please chime in and tell me how you do it? Do you drive like geriatric or what? lol

Driving style has a lot to do with gas mileage. If you are getting 10mpg, I suspect your problem is a combination of a lead foot and a poorly running engine. You probably need a major tune up and a new o2 sensor.

For the record, my 3.0-auto averages 17-18 mpg in the city. 20+ on the highway.

well i dont ˟˟˟˟˟-foot around, i like to get where im going quickly and efficiently. But i dont think i have a lead foot. I think i could get better than 10.7mpg in a bigblock chevy suburban. My isuzu box van gets better mileage than that and i drive that with the pedal to the floor at all times! lol. If the engine needed a major tuneup would it pass emissions with flying colors?

Yea 10.7 is bad I get around 13.5 in just around town driving and I have a leadfoot, I do need a new o2 sensor though. I would get a new o2 sensor, do the plugs, wires, cap and rotor fuel filter and a new egr valve and I bet you will see a significant increase. BTW MY 95 3.0 auto just passed emissions with a CEL 25 so I don't think the emissions has much to do with mpg.

if the egr is throwing a cel it shouldnt have passed emissions. the way you drive does have a huge effect on gas mileage, but even with a lead food you should be able to beat 10mpg lol. Definately look at an 02, they tend to be a 100k mile item.

ps. Quickly and Efficiently tend not to go together when driving anything. the faster you accelerate, the faster you burn gas, and it takes more energy per mile to go 85 mph than 65

edit: just went back and read that you have a 3.4 with a supercharger. that combined with a lead foot could definately put you down there in the low teens.

That is in my 87 minitruck, im talkin about my 95 4runner. In fact my minitruck with the supercharger gets better mileage than my 4runner almost 2-fold!

Check the little stuff. I put a true Flow filter in my truck the other day and now I get 3 mpg better on avg. just because the filter was dirty. Have the timing checked and maybe pull out a spark plug to see what it looks like. I have never used it but everybody else seems to think that Sea Fome stuff helps.

I had been averaging about 16 (15.8 when doing extended periods above 90mph)... but by taking it easy on the last time I filled up (this morning), I averaged 18mpg...

Bear in mind that's 18mpg in san antonio city driving and only the first 1/2 tank. I'd expect it to raise even higher on the second 1/2 of the tank...

Was getting 14 constant before replacing O2 sensor.

EDIT: By taking it easy I mean

1st - 3400 rpm's before shift
2nd - 3400
3rd - 3000
4th - 3000
5th - don't do much over 70mph and only ease on the throttle... don't hammer it to gain speed.

I am pulling 17mpg a tank on 31"s at 6500' elevation with a CEL for a bad knock sensor. I have ran a couple cans of B12 chemtool injector cleaner (1/2 the price of seafoam) through it and it runs good.

Well, any improvements in your mileage? I've got a new 02 sensor comin this week and I'm hoping it really brings mine back up.

I have never seen above 13mpg in my beast and I'm running stock size tires at the moment.

Well I just passed 400 miles on my first 14 gal, with 7 more gallons left in the tank.... oh, that was my Volvo.

My 4Runner runs around 14mpg, with lights on and 8 miles of dirt roads every time I go anywhere.

Then again, that is also true of the Volvo (lights on and 8 miles of dirt road).

Then again, if it rains for a couple of days, the Volvo stays home, and the 4Runner or the SR5 truck does its thing. Quite well, thank you.

I was getting about 10 m.p.g. in mine. Fixing a major vacuum leak, timing, NGK Iridiums, cap & rotor change got me in the 18 m.p.g. range with mostly highway driving & some city. If I drive a tank out in stop & go city driving exclusively it's about 15 m.p.g.

Just do a tune up & keep your toes out of the injectors

ok get this....
3.0, auto...tranny porblems...driving with the ECT unplunged(i'm not worried about that cause i'm getting a good used one for $175)

but back on subject, recently replaced:
EGR vavle
plugs
cap+rotor
wires
new intake, no leaks, works great
k&n air filter(not very dirty)
new O2 sensor
new timing belt

even with all that done i'm getting about 10.8-12 mpg city
i think it may be cause i've never replaced the PCV vavle(can't get that mother out)

but soon i will be replaceing the vavle cover gaskets, pvc, and cleaning the intake manifold...and runnung some seafoam
hopefully that with a new tranny will put me back at 18mpg city

(note i'm only running 31s with stock 4;1os)

I think anyone who says they get 20+ MPG without any mods is full of it. I keep my engine tuned up and the best I've got on the highway is 18.5MPG. Hell the factory rating is only 14/16.

The window sticker I saw was 15/18 for the 3.0 in a '95 4Runner but I agree, it's hard to believe. The 3VZE just isn't a fuel miser, it's a pig.
