16" wheels

i have a 2nd gen. 4runner and my stock rims wouldnt allow a 33x12.5 because they were too wide. but is a 16x7 rim fine for most upgraded sizes of tires in that range? it seems the popular size is a 285/75 or a 305/70. will both of those sizes fit on a set of factory 16x7 rims?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the stock wheels are 7" wide, also.

Stock rims on 2nd gen is 15x7. You don't need more diameter to run 33x10.5's, you need more width, and probably more backspacing. 8" wide rims will handle 12.50's, I think the next step is 10" wide rims.

Or save a bunch of money on rims and fender flares, and go with 33x10.50's

i know 33x12.5 wont fit on stock wheels(15x7). thats why i upgraded to the rockcrawler rims. im asking about 16" rims though. what profile is the biggest for a 16x7? 15" rims dont typically go higher than a 31" ratio.

People here have gone as high as 35's on stock 16" wheels. Off the top of my head, 4x4runnergirl has 35's and here's her truck: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f79/4x4runnergirls-2001-4runner-35s-69115/.

Bamachem has 34's (I think 305/70/16) and here's his truck:

Your question isn't making much sense to me... When you say "what profile is the biggest for a 16x7" do you mean what's the largest diameter tire you can put on it? Or what's the widest tire?

What do you mean by "15' rims don't typically go higher than a 31" ratio"?? I'm not sure what a "31' ratio" is...

sorry bad wording... on the 15" rims, the tires in metric sizes (ex. 235/75/15) stop at about a 255/75/15 (just under a 31"). after the 255/75, only standard sizes are available (ex. 33x12.5x15). on 16" rims and bigger, the metric sizes are indefinite and most common, not many standard sizes are made for the bigger rims.

so my question is... what is the biggest "metric size" that can fit on a 16x7 rim? a 285/75, 305/70...? sorry i dont know much about the metric size stuff, im used to getting exactly what i want with the 15's. lol

The widest id go on the stock 7" is the 285/75/16 which equates to approx 33.1 X 11.3. If you want to go with the 305 or 315's youd have to go up to the 8inch wide wheels. even with the 285's i find the 8inch wide wheels fit the tires better than on 7inchers...

i read somewhere to not exceed the sectional width by 4(or so) inches of the rim width... so ideally, with a 7" you dont want to go wider than 11 or so inches of tire. you may get too much sidewall angle, especially if you air down.

hope this helps some

BFG has a 285/75 R16 and a 295/75 R16 which are 33' in diameter. Both are listed for 7.5"-9.5" rims.
Check their website and search for tyre specs. You'll find a conversion list for the metric sizes.

I ordered the BFG 305/70RR16 M/T's this week.
I plan on using them on American Racing 10x16 wheels. So I haven't seen them yet' but a tyresize like that can never be used properly on 7" wheels in my opinion.

I suggest you go spend some time reading around on the tire manufacturers sites, and maybe Discount Tire and Tire Rack sites too. Also note that you can find charts that tell you what size metric-sized tires are in inches. (Those 307/70R16s you mention are 33x12.50 for example.) Also they will tell you what the recommended rim widths are.

I have 35s on 15" (15x8.5") so I don't know what you are thinking about 31s being the limit.
Both metric sizing and the old inch sizing are perfectly common no matter what diameter rim, so your thinking is off there too.

Changing from 15x7 rims to 16x7 rims does not give you the ability to run any different sizes - the same tire widths are available and the limit is due to your chosen 7' width. Changing to 15x8 (or 16x8) will work much better if you want to go with 33x12.50s (or 305/70R16) People DO run 12.50s (or 305s) on 7" rims but it not a very good practice. You will also find that going up to 10" wide rims will require more lift than 8" rims as they will cause more rubbing, and they may not be popular with your local cops, as the tires will stick out a lot more.

I've got 265/75/16's on '01 Sequoia rims on my '91 4Runner. Actual dia. is like 31.6" with Nitto's Terra Grappler. Had them mounted up for about 4k miles with no probs... not showing any abnormal wear. Don't know if I would go too much bigger than this on a DD. The '01 Sequoia rims are 16x7's

Ever look into a 255/85 r16?

This is 33.4" in diameter and about 10.5" width. I'm running tundra wheels on my truck and this will be my next purchase. BFG muds are offered in that size and probably a few others. Best thing about this is they seem to fit with no lift and little to no rubbing. Dont know if this is relavent to your question or not but I figured i'd add my .02 anyway.
