02 Sensor Wire cut

02 Sensor Wire cut

hi i just picked my first Toyota truck 1986 turbo 4x4. Today i was working under the hood when i noticed the Wire that plugs into the 02 sensor had been cut and was laying on the valve cover., does the 02 sensor wire going down into the small harness next to the intake manifold trying to reconnect the wire, is the wire color not the insulator like gray in color? on a side note i also tryed to pull a check engine light code, jumped the connector with a paper clip all i got was a solid check engine light on with no flashes?

From the factory the O2 sensor wire should be Black

If this is indeed a 1986

Did you follow the proper procedure when trying to check for codes ??

It is a 30 year old truck no telling what does not work like it should anymore

Yea pretty i sure i did it correctly , so when the 02 wire had was cut and i was driving around shouldn't there of been a check light coming on the dash?

If the CEL doesn't flash, the most likely issue is that you did not correctly connect the jumper. Wrong pins, or more likely, inadequate connection. If you had correctly made the connection, the CEL would flash 2 Hz for NO codes. A broken o2 sensor wire should certainly throw a code (several).

Or, as wyoming9 hints, a lot can happen to a truck in 30 (31) years.

Looks like 10,14 are the codes that flashed, smells like it's running rich to

note that there is no 14.

With a cut sensor wire, the code I would expect is 5. But '86 is ancient to me.

yea so there was no code for the 02 sensor wire being disconnected and no check check engine light coming on while i was driving. i pulled the fuse to reset and clear the codes recheck tomorrow i am going to a friends shop see if we cant figure it out.

The CEL does come light when you turn the ignition on??

There is indeed a code 14 on the OP`s engine it is the Turbo charger pressure could be anything in the circuit ,

Turbo AFM or ECU or the wiring if one does not have the turbo this code gets forgotten about

yea my model is the turbo, AFM Air flow meter dirty? The check engine functions when i turn the key to acc then goes away when i start the truck.

14 is RTE specific, it's overboost fuel cut off..

10 is a starter signal, easy to mistake 11 for 10 which is the TPS idle or AC switch.

14 sucks. You'll need to make very sure your boost pressure is well regulated and under 7.5psi. TPS sensor is adjusted to show idle at 1.4° or less, TPS Vta (throttle angle) reads at least 70° AT the ECU with the pedal to the floor.

If those don't get you there your going to need a wideband o2 to monitor air fuel ratios while you fiddle with the VAFM spring.

Or just quit stomping the pedal to the floor..

Oxygen sensor wire.

They kind of all look the same color at this age, it doesn't help I am blue green and red color blind, you have light ones and dark ones..

There are only two shielded wires in that area, one is the knock sensor, the other is the oxygen sensor. I have a crappy picture in my gallery here, "how to ID a mystery wire" is the title.

If you're unsure just probe it at the loose end and the ECU with a continuity tester, then consult the ECU pin diagram.

what strange is it runs fine all threw the gears just at idle sounds rough.

Did you ever find a reason for this?

For the rough idle I'd suggest verifying TPS adjusted, idle rpm and ignition timing correct.

No i ll have check those adjustments tomorrow , i just gave a tune up, spark plugs,wires,cap,rotor, cleaned the Mass air flow, Still smells really rich at idle also , all the old plugs were normal.
